  1. That Jerry pic looks a little later than ’77 (not that it has to be a 77 pic)…didn’t think the fat man was quite that hefty til early 80’s, regardless, the fatman melts, still..

  2. It is definitely off by a few years. It looked king of like 1977 hair when I found the thumbnail on Google Image search so I just grabbed it. But now that I really look at it, he’s definitely too big for that year.

  3. Thanks for this – great! About the pic: Yep, Jerry looks a bit older, but the guitar seems to be the one he was using in 1977, no?

  4. Hard to tell guitar from that pic. It almost resembles his seemingly favorite tiger guitar. I forget what it was but I think it was completely custom made & I’m almost positive I saw him play it many times throughout the 80’s. But I can’t tell what’s on the picture esp with my handset.

Mat, I sent you the picture of Jerry, lol, all “dolled up”, lol. It would be fine to use for one of the Jerry shows here, if you want.

While I was searching the old drive I hadn’t had access to for yrs, I came across about a 30 min mp4 video, look like 8mm (?) of the the dead in Egypt in 78, w/all sorts of weird footage inside & out of the great pyramid & 3 or 4 tunes the dead did there, in case anyone has never seen it. I don’t recall having ever seen it before.

    Jeff

  5. I’ve never had this happen before. The copy/pasted links are going to wrong page. Sorry. Just delete it & I’ll investigate the problem..

  6. Yikes. Mat, you see the double space before “(guitar) “? That space is not supposed to be there & it’s not there until I paste the url. This last time, I hand typed it & it still made the double space when posted. If you know how to take the space out, it links to Jerry’s tiger guitar page.

  7. Dylan Dave…what is the “double link rule”? Also, the link I tried to post like 3 times is the correct link but no matter what I do, when I post it, the architecture here creates that double space at the end of url. I don’t understand why it does that. It’s not very important anyway…I just thought I would post a good link about the guitars.

  8. Dylan Dave…what is the “double link rule”? Ok I see the link you posted has the same problem even tho the spaces are gone, results laced by the percent signs. What causes that?

  9. Jeff I copied and pasted the link into a browser to test it and it was fine
I did mine by opening the page and copying from the address bar, this is the most reliable method. How links are handled gepends on many factors, OS, browser or document editor, blog template etc etc etc

i could see the link you were trying to post – boy that’s a lot of money for a geeetar

ps sorry the double link rule ref was just for Mat – all comments with more than one link get directed first to him for ‘moderation’. Trouble is i keep forgetting, especially when i find exciting new van posts like the one i just added to the van glasgow post below.

  10. Confusing.. The 1st time I tried to post the link, it was like you say you did…by copying the url from the page header & then posting it here. Same thing 2nd time. 3rd time I tried to hand type it. All 3 times it posted here w/the “(guitar)” at the end, having a double space before it. The real url doesn’t have that. I don’t think any url’s ever have a line break. So then, like you, I tried to paste the link into a browser & it was fine. In fact, of course it was fine…it had to be fine because I got it from the page I went to after doing a search. Therefore is why I determined that it had to then be something about this blog (you would think..) that was causing the double space to appear. Then, when you tried to paste it here, on my screen it has 2 percent signs, instead of the double space & when I clicked on that, it had the same issue as the link w/the double space, ie, it went to the regular Tiger page, not the guitar page. Then you post your 2nd try, which ended differently than my link. It had “Doug_Erwin” at the end, instead of “(guitar)” & while it went to the same site, I don’t think it was the same exact page. So again, I would like to know what caused the double space to appear here? I want to know if it has anything to do with my funky opera mini (used to be great/now crap) browser or if just attributable to this blog site? Maybe Mat has some idea about it? It is important esp since it caused a good url to go to a completely different site. That could be a real problem! I will try the link in 3 different browsers & see how it copies. I think this is just one of those “markup language” thingy’s..

Really! A million bucks for Jerry’s “Tiger”, wow! More than Hendrix, Clapton, etc axes, by FAR! How ironic also, that Jerry willed the guitars to their creator, and how the band disputed Jerry’s right to do so in the 1st. “See here how everything, leads up to this day….”

  11. Tony there’s alot of info about which guitars in use when, but a clear history of that is a different story, for ex, I posted that the ax in Mat’s pic looks possibly like “wolf” & that wolf was back in use 77/78 (after some falls & damage in Europe tour) & that it was then (reported to be) “in use” for the next 10 yrs or so, but the info didn’t say when or how often it was in use after 79. This is significant ONLY in the context of trying to figure out either the guitar Jerry is playing in Mat’s pic or the approx date of the pic based on the look of Jerry. So this gets into the realm of fanaticism that I never went that far. In fact I debated whether or not to post my apparent observation that Jerry looked a bit more “along” (lol) in terms of becoming “the fatman”, in the pic, compared to what I thought he looked liked in 77. It wasn’t that important & Mat’s picture choice did not mean to say it was a pic from the show or even the same year as the show being posted, nevertheless I thought it was worth noting, because there’s enough pics of Jerry around to use something close to the show year, thus I posted my comment. Ppl seemed to agree, about the discrepancy, but then came the remark about the guitar. Really hard for me to see much detail on my phone screen, but after a while, it does look much like “wolf”. So it just becomes kind of a fun & somewhat interesting game to try to figure when this pic is from & what ax. My guess is its the wolf guitar but around 80-83 (even tho his main squeeze at those times was the Tiger guitar. I love the look of the Tiger guitar. The one in the pic is definitely not Tiger.

On the other hand, it’s quite possible that Mat, even tho he says he just grabbed a random pic of Garcia w/the right looking hair, nailed it! Because the main use of wolf (according to my newfound knowledge from all this new reading about it) after it came back from repairs/rebuild, was 77/78 AND it’s possible that the camera angle in Mat’s pic was a kind of premature reveal (lol) of the fat to come, haha. I still say it’s early 80’s & ax is wolf.

  12. Wow.. what a trip! (no I don’t mean the one in ’68 or ’69..) . . .

Mat, I was gonna send this as an email to you, cuz it might run a little long… (long?.. me?.. what a concept..), but I think it’s interesting & pertinent enough, so posting here.. (besides, I have about 3 links to post, so I’ll have to break these posts up anyway). Ever since I last emailed that I was gonna try to figure saunders setlist, I have been intermittently weaving in & out of trying to do so… I came up w/some interesting findings, outside of what I was looking for…

1st of all, the 1st track is def not Sunrise Over Haleakala. I don’t think that tune is on my recording. It seems to very possibly be what I guessed in the 1st place, that being “blues for the rainforest”. But it’s really hard to say for certain. I am posting here a YouTube link to a great blues f t rainfor here. It is long, like my recording & has several certain identifiable similarities, but it also is very very different, thus my less than certainty. It also has a fantastic pic of merl & Jerry together, that alone, makes it worth posting. I saved a screenshot of the pic. It’s the epitome of “a picture worth a thousand words” saying. I could easily say a thousand about it. Just look at that almost “evil eye” kind of stoic expression on Jerry… Lol.. and how it contrasts w/Saunders expression. Haha. A book could be written around this pic..almost looks like Jerry could be wearing a back brace? Definitely looks like early 90’s, no? The song cut is amazing as well (the YouTube).

This & my recording, of this tune, are so different, yet have some related elements. It took me til about 12 min in, before I was convinced that maybe it’s the same tune…

By the way, at about 5 min mark, Jerry guitar kicks in & it is sooo classic Garcia guitar sound! The deaf, dumb & blind kid, could recognize the absolute signature sound & style Jerry guitar here. At one point, it almost sounds like he could momentarily break into St Stephen. Of course, my recording doesn’t have Jerry on it…
You can hear from time to time… the ghostly appearing & disappearing beat, common to both this & my recording. It reminded me of a slowed down version of a beat heard in aiko-aiko or women are smarter…. bop, bop, bop – – bop bop… and was the single most cohesive part to convince me the 2 songs are the same (YouTube & my recording’s 1st track) here it is:

    Merle Sanders&Jerry Garcia-blues for the rainfore…http://youtu.be/DgOqRwjaKxg

While I was trying to determine if the 2 tunes were same basic tune, I heard something familiar, that seems outside of their commonality. It was just a few notes of the recurring melody. I tried to play it on my guitar & after I nailed several notes, I took a wrong turn & then heard another, but different familiarity. I couldn’t place it, but it was familiar enuff to demand I explore it further. I thought for a few moments & boom, I recalled a distinctly different but similar tune. I had to wrack my brain to remember what or where it came from… To backstep for a second, while I was listening & attempting to compare the 2 versions, I noticed a very distinct similarity to a tune I had drilled into my head several years ago..

At that time, my daughter (who lives on the other side of the country) was telling me about my very young granddaughter & happened to mention how she took her to see the awesome Carousel at the Carousel mall in Syracuse NY. & how much the little one loved it.. I immediately went into action, trying to find online, a great Carousel & some music, in attempt to try & take advantage of a tiny tots love for the Carousel & find something for her to see & hear at home, to jump off her fondness of the Carousel. I did some searching & was lucky enough to find a very recently made (in 2007) audio/video creation. I did my best to copy it & send it along to her, but technically the challenge was too much for my daughter to use her computer skills to deal w/the funky format & get it put together on her end, to be able to play for the little girl. I tried to hang in their w/her to get it all worked out, as I seriously wanted to turn her on to this music & video super lullaby. I found it very beautiful & hypnotic & thought it was most magical, almost psychedelically.. I got into a hassle w/my daughter because she dropped the ball on it.

A couple yrs went by & I wound up trying again. The video was very hard to find but I did & in much higher quality & it had very few hits, but was some kind of award winning video. So the little one finally belatedly, got to see it & I was told she loved it..

I heard this familiarity not just between the 2 versions of this saunders tune, but something common & very familiar to some outside source. After awhile, I determined the similarity that I was picking up, was maybe, from the Carousel video. I dug it up from my newly accessible old hard drive (thanks to Dylan Dave) & compared & there is no doubt in my mind as to an uncanny similarity, purposely or not, contained in & common to, the melodies. It blew my mind. And there is yet even more I discovered about this melody, possibly, but 1st, I want to post the video. It is called “Carousel dreams”. And also post the YouTube version of the saunders song: “blues for the rainforest”. Y’all won’t be able to make the comparison also, to my recorded version, until Mat posts the concert I recorded (hint, hint) (it’s the 1st track), but if nothing else, I guarantee (or I will eat my masters) that someone’s little girl here, will love the “Carousel Dream” video.

Once we get past that (and hopefully someone will also see the similarities between the melodies), then I also found possibly another similarity, to an even older well known lullaby.

(sorry I can’t help telling stories. If this is boring, maybe the show i recorded will make up for it…)

I will post the link to the Carousel Dreams video, in the following post Wow.. what a trip! (no I don’t mean the one in ’68 or ’69..) . . .

  13. Ok, check it out.. I know the above long post about the music similarities sounds crazy, but I really do see it.. The similarity is between Carousel Dream & blues for the rainforest, the one posted as a YouTube video w/Jerry & merl. The problem is that most of that version is birds & rain & a little percussion, not much of the melody or the chorus (whichever it is?) for most of the video, that basic melody only kinda flits in & out lightly a few times. It never really latches on. Until about 11:52, then you get to hear that melody pretty good from merl’s keyboard & underneath Jerry’s guitar.. It is pretty much only there that the comparison can be really heard. And when Mat posts my recording of that song, it’s a whole different thing w/o that similarity but I still think it’s blues for the rainforest anyway. If anyone does get to hear the similarity I’m talking about, then I also detected that there are 2 famous lullaby’s that seem to form or contain the basic melody I’m speaking of, and they are rockabye baby & brahms Lullaby. Both those lullaby’s, I believe, can be lined up to play together & also could go along w/the melody of Carousel Dream & blues for rainforest (the melody part).

    ……………or not..

(lol, it really struck me that way yesterday. It was uncanny.. no drugs, no alcohol)
