The Amazon Thing

I’ve been getting some complaints about the Amazon hoster so I wanted to create a special spot just for that.  How is Amazon working for you?  Several people have noted that their web browser seems to think the links contain viruses.  On my end I can promise that I’m not putting anything nasty into the links and I can’t imagine Amazon is doing something like that.

From my understanding Amazon Cloud Drive isn’t really intended for sharing files in the manner that I am sharing them.  I think its supposed to be more of a cloud backup system, or perhaps something like Drop Box.  They have share links but I’m guessing those are intended for sharing with just one or two people, perhaps in a work collaboration or something similar and not shared with hundreds of strangers across the globe.

However I see nowhere in their terms and conditions that you aren’t allowed to share like I am so I’m going with it.  But, based upon this concept I’m thinking that some browsers are looking at those links and thinking something fishy is going on.

From what I hear those who are getting the messages are able to simply bypass it and continue onto the downloads.  I do apologize if you are getting that message, but I don’t know how to fix it.

A few others have complained that they are simply unable to download the files at all.  Those of you who are able to download regularly might be able to help with this better than me.  From what I see you simply click on the file you want, it then highlights itself and a little download button appears at the bottom of the page.

If you are having trouble with the downloads would you please leave a comment here.  Also please tell us exactly what problems you are encountering and what type of computer you are using as well as what browser you are experiencing the problem on.

Again I apologize and hope that we can get things fixed.

  1. Has worked great for me. I’m on windows 8 using the latest chrome browser. I much prefer Amazon to some of the hosts used in your earlier posts. The only issue is that sometimes I have to wait a few moments for the download button to appear or the “save to” location dialog to appear. But this is very minor and likely expected behavior. Otherwise it has been working flawlessly for me and thanks for that.

  2. Hi Mat,

I’ve been using the Amazon download since you started it, and it works like a charm. I have had no problems whatsoever, and the shows download quickly. I download the FLAC versions, so they are typically large files.

I have not had the problem of virus warning on your site, on other sites I have received the warning. The warning was not dependent on file sharing service (have had it with MegaShare & ZippyShare). However, I simply change to another browser, and everything works fine.

On the second problem, there is nothing to indicate that you have to select a file to download. The download button appears at the bottom of the page when it opens. If there is only one file, it is not intuitively obvious that you have to highlight it first before clicking download.

Personally, I am quite happy with the Amazon download service.

PS: A big THANK YOU, for all your hard work.

    1. Hi Mat — When I use Mozilla Firefox sometimes (not always) I get a virus/malware warning. Then I switch to Google Chrome and it works just fine. I only do the mp3’s………….. Thanks again.

  3. I speak just for myself, and usually use Safari or Firefox on some breed of Mac (from Leopard thru Lion), but have had no trouble at all.

  4. Hi Mat!

I’ve never had a problem with any of your mp3 downloads, until the Neil Young Buffalo 1973 show. Like Tom, I got the virus/malware warning. I’ve never used Google Chrome for downloads but I’ll give it a try. Keep up the great work my friend.

  5. No problems here. FLAC downloads work fine. Nice & fast. Hate to see anything change. Appreciate your efforts. Keep up the good work!

  6. No problems with Amazon for me. I use Google Chrome. Have downloded both FLAC and mp3
Thanks for all the great stuff, it’s much appreciated.

  7. Dear Midnight Cafe

I have been an avid follower of your blog, having downloaded most of your Dead concerts. Whatever be the host site through which I have got through, Amazon or whatever, I have had no problems.

My only request is that you do not post junk-sounding recordings. Sometimes I take effort to download, and find that the recording quality is poor and I need to delete the downloaded files! There are a few DOORS concerts going that fit that bill. Or you might post a warning that the quality might be just Ho Hum!

    Thanks.

    1. I totally understand where you are coming from with the poor audio quality of some shows. Thing is some folks are completist – they want every copy of every show even if the sound is crap. So I’ll continue to post all the shows I have, even if the sound isn’t great to help fill those gaps.

Likewise everyones ears are different. Not to mention their sound equipment. There have been times when I’ve listened to something on my computer and thought it sounded awful only to really enjoy it when I played the same show in my car. A better system can go a long way to making audience recordings sound better.

Ultimately its a judgment call and I’d rather not make it. When I know the sound isn’t great I try to let everyone know. But the truth is I often post shows before I’ve even heard them. The nature of running this site means I post tons of shows all the time and I just don’t have the time to keep up.

Sorry about that. You are very welcome to ask before you download. If you see an audience recording that you think might not be a great sound, please leave a comment and I’ll try to give it a quick listen and let you know how it sounds.

  8. Google chrome handles the Amazon thing, flawlessly when downloading…no issues ever. Your site has been flawless……in both selections and availability of FLAC. Keep up the good work…..

  9. I have gotten the virus/malware warning as well but since I’ve gotten so much stuff from you I override the warning and haven’t had any other issues. I use Firefox and a script blocker as well.

  10. I’ve found Amazon to work great. It’s fast, easy to use, and I don’t have to click through a bunch of gimmicks to get to download the file. Appreciate all your work and love the tunes!

  11. Thanks for the comments everybody. It appears that most are not experiencing any problems. I still don’t really know why some are getting a virus popup but please continue to ignore it. Most of you have been around here long enough to know I won’t be sending nasty stuff out. (Though it might be amusing if this was one really long con and after years of posting great music I suddenly started flooding the site with viruses 😉

Please do continue to let me know when and if you experience any problems and I’ll try to help.

    1. I spoke too soon, downloaded the Dead 69 today (thank you, thank you, thank you), via Firefox and got the virus message, switched to IE (by mistake, meant to use Chrome) and it downloaded just fine.

  12. Hate that Bob, glad you found a work around.

Interestingly I’ve been having trouble uploading of late as well. It will work really well for several files and then error out on the last file. There are times when I’ve tried to upload a single file half a dozen times.

Just had that problem, actually, switched from FF to Safari and it worked like a charm. Might be some weird FF thing causing Amazon problems.

    1. Hi Matt, I’m using Google chrome on my pc with no problems. However I am having the odd download blocked by chrome at other sites. I also know windows 10 is also causing problems as well. Amazon is OK by me.

  13. I really like this download service – works well and allows more than one file to be downloaded at once. And as everyone says above, thanks for providing this music and caring enough to consult on download services.

  14. I just tried to download a FLAC file (also tried the MP3). It was blocked in Firefox–saying it contained spyware or a virus, but I was able to download the FLAC file in Microsoft Edge with no problem.

  15. hi Matt,

Those having trouble with chrome downloads can do the following.

Turn off phishing & malware warnings
The following steps will turn of phishing and malware warnings, as well as download warnings.
In the top-right corner of the browser window (three vertical lines), click the Chrome menu Chrome menu.
    Select Settings.
    Click Show advanced settings.
Under “Privacy”, untick the box “Protect you and your device from dangerous sites”.

  16. Hm… these comments are making me want to try Chrome for my DL’s here, because unfortunately every time I’ve DL’ed one via Firefox, not only does it say it may have a virus, but it goes thru the whole DL process then tells me it killed the DL. So, not an option to get around it on my end, w/ Firefox.

So I’ll try Chrome. Mat, thanks for everything on your blog – as you know I am a longtime fan too and sure appreciate your generosity!

    1. I’m awful sorry about that Grant. As you know nothing ever works for everyone. I thought Amazon was doing well for everybody but of course that’s not true. Let me know if Chrome works for you. Its weird because I’ve used Firefox to download some stuff from my blog just as a trial and never had any trouble.

  17. Had no problems at all. Am on Windows 10 and use Maxthon as my browser, works fine all the time. And most important of all – I just don’t know how to thank you enough! You rock just doesn’t seem to cover it.

    1. Sir

I have downloaded every Grateful Dead concert you have up to the end of ’72. Of late I see only the Amazon thingy during downloads. I use Windows 10 and chrome, and the process is FINE and SMOOTH! No trouble AT ALL!
