  1. My understanding is that VH1 asked Tom Waits to do a Storytellers for their channel, set him up and filmed it but for whatever reason never actually aired the footage. Eventually the audio leaked out and has been traded in bootleg circles ever since. It is essential listening as Tom Waits sure knows how to tell a story (and write a song.)

  2. Yeah, this is a fab and essential set – got the lossless somewhere about, not immediately to hand however

  3. A few years ago I found the video on YouTube. It’s only 44 minutes long, though, and it’s been so long since I watched it I can’t remember if these are the same performances. I recognize several of the songs, though, and I remember that he had Smokey Hormel on guitar.

  4. Wow thanks so much for this set from Tom – love this format of Storyteller VH1 don’t understand how it never was broadcast but it makes for a fine fine quality boot. What every else has said was and is really interesting though I haven’t found it on Youtube yet Bobby and Mat’s comments really useful to know. I love this period Tom around the millennial turn and ‘Big in Japan’ remains a favourite album. ‘What’s he doing in there?’ I think I have become the strange old guy in the neighbourhood!
