A Whole Bunch of Jerry

Screen-Shot-2014-04-22-at-3.53.08-PM

My buddy Ross just sent me this.

I’m picturing all you Jerry fans with grins as big as his in the picture. I’ve just started poking my way through it. I’ll be spending the next several days working my way, show by show, to see if this has anything my other source doesn’t have and grabbing it.

It feels silly now to post any other Jerry shows since you can just grab the via this Mediafire link, but I’m still going to do it. Just slowly. That may be better for those of you who don’t want to dig through all these text files to see what’s interesting. Or for those of you who want MP3s.

For the rest of you all, enjoy! This should keep you busy for a long time.

From the original uploader:
This one is a bit more listenable, although it has typical problems associated with recording methods.

This was recorded in an office inside the Omni. The Static is our attempt to fine tune Jerrys ear monitor. The frequencies changed every night and were very close together.

Enjoy!

(1) Jerry: “It should be loud because that’s the melody you know. It should be out over the others.”

(2) Jerry: “Let’s go over it a time or two and get the arrangement. Hey Pig, do you want to do two verses and then into that uh drum business?  Well let’s, let’s decide that because that, that’s uh…”  Phil: “Bring some more grub man.”  Jerry: “Ok that would be the stomp because…”

(3) How many verses do you want to go through on Lovelight?  I think two, two and then a drum thing. And then after, after the bridge come on back and start get back into Lovelight.  Play it man. And you’ll have to play organ too. Give us a signal then, at the end. At the end, go back into the regular bar solo. Go back into the regular again. Go back into a regular verse at the end and go ‘shine, shine, shine, let it shine’.

Notes from the original uploader:

Source #1: 7th gen cassette (stereo) was used for takes 2-14 (tracks 2 through 16).
Source #2: unknown gen cassette (mono) was used for takes 1 and 15 (tracks 1 and 17).
Source #2 was of lower quality, but had an extra take at the beginning and another at the end,
The take numbers are not spoken on the recording, but are listed for reference.

This was commonly traded on cassette, dated as “11/19/67”.  The 45 minute segment has never circulated in digital format till now, with the exception of take 6 which is part of:

gd1967-11-xx.sbd.studio.81259.flac16

as well as:

gd67-10-20.studio.poynton-sirmick.85631.sbeok.flac16

This Lovelight practice session is now labelled as gd67-xx-xx.  There are several reasons to conclude it was made before November 19, 1967 – in fact before August 5, 1967 (currently the earliest known live Lovelight):

– Most importantly, from the talking between takes it is clear they are working out the arrangement. Maybe this the first time they are playing it?

– Definitely only one drummer
– Pigpen sings it a bit differently; in fact he only sings the first verse, over and over.
– The band doesn’t have any backing vocals except the “let it shine” bit, which was dropped & never appears live.
– The guitar parts are much simpler – on 8/5/67 they’re a lot more complex & bouncy.
– They don’t have a transition after the first verse.  By 8/5/67 they have a smoother drum transition.
– Garcia doesn’t have his soloing down for this song at all, and doesn’t seem to have worked out any part other than the chords.

Happy Holidays, Y’all

eabffb25871b65392c05e9e86a34f140

I’ll be spending the next week or so enjoying the Holiday Season with my family. As such I’ve decided to give The Midnight Cafe some much needed rest. I’ll probably start back up a little before the New Year, but if not I want to say a great big thanks to this community for making 2016 a little brighter for me.

I appreciate all the insightful comments, the ‘thank yous’ and even the complaints when I’ve screwed up. I literally would not keep posting all this great music if it wasn’t for your words.

Have the very best of holidays, and a very happy new year.

Notes:
– Poster Artists Benefit. Other acts included Country Joe McDonald, Dinosaurs and Nick Gravenites and Animal Mind. Jerry also sits in with Country Joe McDonald on Starship Ride and Lady With The Lamp. PS’s tape of that set will also be circulated.
– What a delight this little set is. Jerry sounds like he’s having a blast, including on the Bob tunes where he is both playing well and singing some nice harmonies (check out Wang Dang Doodle!). Indeed, in this time frame Jerry seemed to really enjoy these little one-off gigs … check out 1/23/88 (Blues for Salvador), 5/26/89 (with Los Lobos), 8/2/89 (Latino Sessions), and 4/29/90 (Animal Mind) for nice one-offs and guest shots during this period of relative health and happiness. I would argue that this is essential stuff for the Jerry fan.
– The recording is also very nice, the best of the several that I have heard from this night.
– Sounds like some joker blows a kazoo right near the end of Bird Song … might want to be careful for your speakers at that point.
– Big thanks to PS for taping, transferring and sharing this beauty.

Comments from the original uploader: Hot recording performance and recording level wise with some infrequent intermittent peaking (on many levels) and an extremely full low end. At times noisy (rightfully) crowd losing it and intermittent close up individual clapping – its an outstanding performance. Pausing between some tracks during crowd. Phasing at times which seems to be present to some degree on most recordings from this venue – wind related?

*Fourth and final performance ever of one of the most beautiful and soulful JGB songs – “Twilight”.
