Late Show
This was Vassar Clements’ first show with this band, replacing Richard Greene.
despite any previous claims, allsoundz states flatly that there was only one show, not two.
Doug Sahm opened the show and played a full set. Part of that tape survives and will be seeded here soon.

Show notes: This is Vassar’s first gig with OAITW, and Jerry’s first performance at
the Boston Orpheum (of 20). Allsoundz – the taper of the 83303 source – states that
there was only one show (not early and late as previously listed) and that Doug Sahm
was the opening act. Allsoundz also recalled there was possibly a set-break somewhere
but this is not evident from the tapes; it appears the show might have been one long
set with a three-song encore.

Composite notes: For this show, both sources had pros & cons, and it appeared that the
show could benefit from a composite that joined the two together. Allsoundz tape 83303
has the benefit of being complete and with known lineage, but was recorded farther back
resulting in a more distant recording, with a lot of thumping near the mic. And, while
11889 is incomplete and with unknown number of tape generations, it was recorded closer,
delivering a nice aural picture of the concert. The 11889 taper appears to have been
a lot closer to the stage, perhaps with the mic right on the stage, as the between-song
banter from Spud and the boys can be heard clearly. 11889 was chosen for the bulk of the
show, with 83303 providing patches and the final part that was missing from 11889.

Allsoundz states that his tape is mono. It also appears that the 11889 original recording
was mono, as the Wav’s are identical, albeit having been shifted out of phase, probably
from the few generations of re-recording. For both sources, DC-offsets were removed, left
and right channels were manually aligned, then each source was merged to mono for editing.
Both sources were apparently running slow; 83303 between 40 & 50 cents, and 11889 between
75 & 85 cents. Each source was speed-adjusted as best as possible given the difficulties
of dealing with these old tapes. It’s probably not exact, but it’s pretty close…

Lots of small edits were done to soften mic-bumps, attenuate clapping, repair drop-outs,
etc. Small FLAC size due to mono WAV data. Patches from 83303 added as follows: Willow
Garden 3:18 > 3:19, Lonesome L.A. Cowboy 4:29 > Hard Hearted 0:49, crowd end of Love
Please Come Home 2:39 > Lost 0:06, crowd end of Lost 3:38 > Knockin’ on Your Door 0:18,
and crowd end of Knockin’ on Your Door 3:04 > thru to end of the show. Enjoy! (Aug 2014)

Comments: The is the complete radio show, though just the

before a radio announcement. Before Wild Horses the announcer
says that O&ITW will be “at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo,
tonight.” He also indicates that the beginning of Going To
the Races, the first song, wasn’t broadcast due to
technical difficulties.

Notes/Comments:
– This is pretty clearly a soundboard, and Grisman does a
station/program id at some point identifying this as from
WBAI’s “Morning Dew” program. Rob (Eaton?) and a DJ speak
at the very end of the segment. WBAI-FM broadcast this
material on 7/31/99. Beyond that, I don’t know if this is
pre- or post-f.m., nor what media might be involved along
the way. It sounds quite good, and this material is lots
of fun!

Thanks to Harry Angus for the source CDs!

Notes:

– This recording has been provided by an anonymous source.
– Various artifacts such as clicks, pops and crackle have been removed.
– A few small level adjustments and some minor repairs have been made.
– The only other circulating source for this show has both cassette and cdr gens in it.
It also seems that the channels became swapped over time.
– The other source has a cut in “The System” of approximately 1:37 starting around 1:36, this source does not.
– The other source has a cut in “It’s A Sin” of approximately 39 seconds from about 3:03, this source does not.
However, this source has the last 2:25 or so missing.
– Both Garcia’s guitar and Sarah’s vocals move around in the mix from time to time. *
– During the tuning breaks music can be heard playing, presumably bleeding through from a bar or something similar.
– All tracks have been tagged.

There is a very interesting article about the history of the venue here http://jerrygarciasbrokendownpalaces.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/boarding-house-960-bush-st-san.html

Thank You Jerry Garcia, you will always be in our hearts.

Source: MSR > ? > DAT.

Transfer: DAT > Sony D10P > Coax SPDIF > Audiophile-2496 >
Wavelab > R8Brain > CD-Wave > TLH > FLAC 1644.

Source note: This 1996 DAT improves on the 4492/9783 set.
4492 was found to be mono, and has clipped wav’s thru-out.
9783 appears to have been compressed, and L&R are flipped.
This source combines early & late shows into one file-set.

Patches were added to repair problems with the DAT source:
– High Heel Sneakers; 5:22, 6:13, 8:35, from ID-4492.
– I Was Made to Love Her; 0:52, 1:57, from ID-4492.
– Honey Chile; 9:20 > 10:11, from ID-4492.
– Like a Road; 10:11 > 10:50, from ID-4492.
– After Midnight; 3:19 > 3:54, from ID-9783.
– Go Climb a Mountain; 10:05 > 11:15, from ID-9783.

There are numerous small snap-crackle-n-pop events thru-out
the recording; fixed major pops with Wavelab, and left most
as-is, as these seem to be present on the MSR. Several cuts
at start of Dixie, 0:07 > 0:14, 0:30, and 0:39. Pops around
those cleaned-up and blank spots left as-is. Some sub-second
digi-zaps patched over with an alternate DAT source. Thanks
to Cbass for assistance with this project. Andrew F. 07/2009

(1) Sara Fulcher on lead vocals. Find A Rainbow has a substantial cut. Go Climb A Mountain has a 12 second splice presumably due to reel flips. The sound is greatly distorted for first 2 songs and partly distorted for songs 3 and 4 due to problems on the reels. This is one of the shows discovered in the Betty Cantor auction.

The tracks on disc one have been altered from the originals. I increased the levels, substantially in tracks 1, 2 and 3 and to a
lesser extent in tracks 4, 5 and 6. Several “pops” were also removed from tracks 3 and 4,using EAC’s Process Wave tool. Where there
was no music to recover, the original recording was left intact. This was done to make the first 2 tracks of this show listenable. I have
not touched any of the tracks for disc 2, as their condition as copied from the originalmaster was much better, than for disc 1.
