Review:
Crystal Cat has unleashed the new kitty of CDs for the 2001 tour. The packages are every bit as stunning as the 2000 crop. The full color, four page booklet
provides a wealth of venue photos and info. The discs are the standard Crystal Cat logo CDs with various color motifs. The back photo, and overall
aesthetics remain similar. What has changed dramatically is the front cover.Gone is the bland looking ticket stub of the previous
year; to be replaced with a sensual cartoon pinup girl of years past. Although the new 2001 “Love and Theft” album was not yet being performed
for this venue, the pinup girl image just seems to fit with the music of a simpler, more innocent time. Needles to say, the quality of the recording is simply
breathtaking.

Phil’s amp fails, forcing an unscheduled acoustic set to close the
show with. Jerry plays electric guitar for some of the acoustic
set. This is also the day that the Dead were busted by the
New Orleans police before the show, prompting some appropriate
stage banter. The recording was normalized with Sound Forge,
which was also used to remove a few small pops.

Brief drop out @ 5:22 TLEO & @ 2:32 Promontory Rider spliced from audience source. D1t02 spliced from audience source. Beginning notes of Mission are cut. The whole show sounded like it was on ‘ludes and using the audience source as a reference, the pitch on the SBD was off by -0.79 semitones with a transposition ratio of 1.047. This was corrected using SF6.

I uploaded this show from a different source some time ago. This is a much better sounding source so if you liked the show, but hated the sound this ones for you.

Comments from torrentor:
– Beginning of They Love Each Other and most of Russian Lullaby are cut.
– There is pretty significant distortion at times on the first set source, especially during Deal.
– The first set is markely inferior to the second set and I would rate the sound quality as a C-.
– The second set sounds very good and is the reason to get this show with classic renditions of “Sugaree” and “Sitting In Limbo”.

The previous version of this source suffers from multiple analog generations and poor quality digital transfer. Dennis’ cassette is a first gen off the mystery taper’s master and had much less hiss than the previous source without the phase/tape degradation on a source I previously encoded but never really circulated because i thought it sucked. The pitch issues with the other source are not apparent on the new source either.

Processing/Mastering
The following steps were done in mastering the cassette transfer to 16 bit/44.1 KHz WAV:

1. Original 24 bit WAV file was normalized to 87% RMS using Wavelab 5.
2. A 3 second section of the WAV file containing tape noise preceding the onset of musical content was “learned” using Waves X-Noise Plugin and selectively removed at a threshold of 0 dB and 63% removal. Examination of the removed content by visuasl waveform examination and listening showed smooth monotonous hiss without any fluctuation. There was no apparent coloring of the sound using these settings on 24 bit files with a definite reduction in perceived tape hiss.
3. Very minimal bass augmentation using Waves Renaissance Bass Plugin – frequency 90 HZ at a level of -16.7 dB.
4. Waves L3 Multimaximizer Plugin with flat EQ response and threshold of -2 dB/ceiling at -0.02 dB.
5. Mastering was done using the plugins in the above order with direct rendering to 16 bit/44.1 KHz using type I dither with ultra shaping.
6. File tracked using CDWave 1.9 and saved as 16 bit FLAC.

I attempted to restore the first set using some of the above plugin steps, however the results were disappointing and so I just left it as is. It is barely listenable by my personal standards.

original comments from glasnostrd19 in 2009:

A real early solo acoustic show with Joni Mitchell. This is the earliest Joni I’ve ever heard and she already had her distinctive vocal style. She does a bit of talking between some of the tunes, I didn’t bother to seperate the talk into its own tracks as some like to do. I’ve had this tape for years, no idea of its lineage, there is likely a better source for this out there somewhere but this is quite listenable for a 41 year old analog recording. it does have one rather annoying but very brief speed problem in the source recording (or transfer between that and my copy), otherwise the recording is pretty good, especially for this early date, and Joni sounds fine.

Almost all the other Joni Mitchell I listen to is from 76 w/ the L.A. Express and 79 w/ Metheny/Pastorious/Alias group, but some of this is nice to hear now and then. If I wasn’t more interested in jazz and rock music, I’d listen to this alot more. It’s classic Joni.

If you haven’t heard this (apparently parts of 2 sets) and like Joni Mitchell’s unique songwriting and performance style, you will enjoy hearing this. I don’t know how many generations my tape of this is, but there’s only a little bit of tape noise. I have not done any processing of this except to balance the levels out, DC offset where needed, and a couple of splices to smooth out abrupt endings. I don’t know how close to complete this is, but all the songs here are uninterrupted.

Joni played a run of shows at Club 47, the only date in etree is Jan 10th, that setlist order does not match here. It does sound like track 1 may not be the opening song, hard to tell since there’s no stage introduction in the recording.

Since June 2005 this collection has appeared seven times (now eight) at Dime. There were speed problems, dropouts and sector boundary errors along the way, as well as possibly different source tapes and/or tinkering with the sound.

This file set was originally seeded at Dime on Mon 12th Jan, 2009 by glasnostrd19, and doesn’t appear on the bot list after that.

It is not the speed-corrected version by Randall, seeded in 2007. According to one comment, this version has ‘more hiss and more bass though it would be going too far to describe it as “muffled” by comparison’. If somebody could reseed that version it would be nice to be able to compare.

This reseed has new txt, ffp and md5 files, and the SBEs were fixed – all with xACT.

This is the boot commonly known as “By The Banks of the River Charles”. It has four never-released Joni songs: “Gift of the Magi,” “Ballerina Valerie”, “The Way it Is” and “Come to the Sunshine”.

Reseeded at Dime: April 2012
