Shows of the Day: May 30, 2023

Happy Jerry Wednesday to everybody. I hope you enjoy it.

I also hope some of you have been enjoying my old adventures in France. It is funny to me because I haven’t read those old posts since I wrote them over 18 years ago. Some posts bring up wonderful memories. Other posts I don’t remember at all.

Reading them now, with many more years under my belt, and a whole lot more world-traveling experience, I sound very young, very naive, and I seem to complain a lot. At the time I didn’t feel like I was really experiencing culture shock, but looking back I can see that I clearly was. I think back then I thought culture shock was something much more overwhelming – something that would bring me to tears every day or keep me curled up under the covers. But that isn’t me. I always get out of bed and do my best to plow ahead.

But reading these old posts I can see how I was being overwhelmed almost every day by all the differences in our cultures. Certainly, the language barrier was difficult.

I’m almost embarrassed by some of the posts. But I also realize that I wasn’t writing to anyone reading this now. I was writing to a handful of friends and family members. I was writing in a familiar way to people I knew. I was often trying to be funny and sarcastic, which comes off to me now as whiny and annoying.

Anyway, I do hope you are enjoying the posts, even if I do sound like a dumb little kid lost in the big world of baguettes.

Bootlegs of the Day: April 25, 2023

Does anyone know the difference between a Legion of Mary show and just a Jerry & Merl show? Was there a lineup difference at this time? Or were they actually billed differently depending on the day? Or is it that collectors sometimes label them wrong? Or something else. I go by whatever the text file says it just seems strange that some get the LoM label and others don’t, but I have no idea if there is a reason.

Great music either way.

Notes/Flaws: A great recording of a great show! A brief dropout at the very beginning of Favela, minor mix/level issues here and there, minor tape degradation here and there, but none of it detracts from the listening experience (imho).

Notes from the anonymous seed provider: The 8/30/74 is slightly out of order when compared to Deadbase & my old analog copy. However, this came from Dick->my source->me, so I left it as-is. I have always really enjoyed this one & the upgrade took me 5 years to track down.

there stood an idyllic folk-music club called the Ash Grove.
Ed Pearl’s Ash Grove folk music club at 8162 Melrose Avenue in

Comments: Early show recording is of relatively poor audio quality with hiss and tape warble, however this is the only known source to circulate. I am not entirely convinced that it is a SBD as I can hear people talking between songs, but it is at a very low level. I applied a – 1.0 semitone pitch transposition to the early show using SF6. The late show has more low end and sounds in stereo compared to the previously circulated source which to my listening is a mono recording. Also I don’t think this source has the cut in Wondering Why.
