A solid SBD recording. Thanks to Tom Reizes for the DAT.

Opened for Little Feat. Billed as Levon Helm and the Classics, but Chris O’Leary introduces the band as the Barn Burners.

The Albany Times Union reviewed the concert here: http://alb.merlinone.net/mweb/wmsql.wm.request?oneimage&imageid=5944247 The paper said:

“The Band’s Levon Helm has played with a number of different bands in recent years, and there was some confusion as to just who was onstage Tuesday opening the show. The advertising proclaimed his band to be the Classics, but in fact, they have been dubbed the Barn Burners. Whatever you want to call them, they sounded simply great.

Helm’s voice has been silenced by illness in recent years, but he was still a knockout behind his drum kit. And his band — led by vocalist, harmonicat and Schenectady native Chris O’Leary — mined the rich vein of blues nuggets from masters like Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner and James Cotton.

Barrere and Tackett slipped onstage to join in the festivities, but this band didn’t need any special guests. They lived up to their name, no matter which one it was.”

In August 1999, Levon Helm and the Classics was:

Levon Helm – drums
Chris O’Leary – vocals
Pat O’Shea – guitar
Francis Anthony Salvatore – bass

  • w/ Amy Helm (vocals)
^ w/ Paul Barerre (slide guitar)
    (I didn’t hear Fred Tackett)

Enjoy!

As always thanks to Nellie at Expecting Rain for this compilation.

Nellie always includes an enormous amounts of excellent notes with these compilations. I usually trim them down considerably so that my posts aren’t enormous. I did the same here, but do to the nature of the Rolling Thunder Review with its wide variety of people on stage the notes are still a little unwieldy. I hope they still make sense. But if not you still wanna get this comp. – Mat

RTR Part 2 is very different to RTR Part 1. The music is tougher, heavier, edgier. At times it borders on hard rock.
There is way more to RTR 2 than the official Columbia Hard Rain live album.

There is a great breadth & depth of material here.
Bob was dealing with all sorts of personal demons at the time but it seems to just fuel the fire.
Not for the faint-hearted – it is a very bumpy ride but well worth it.

Lies, damn lies & statistics:

All the songs performed by Dylan & The Rolling Thunder Revue on tour in 1975
15 of a total of 25 concerts represented here, plus six rehearsals & one birthday party.
129 tracks.
112 different songs.

From the original uploader:
I’ve seen this recording listed on people’s internet lists for years, all, apparently, copies from an edited 60 minute listening copy of the master I made years ago. Since both Levon and Rick’s estate are trade friendly, I decided it was time to post the whole show here.

In early 1983, Helm and Danko did this tour as an acoustic duet. Rick is heard on the guitar and vocals, while Levon covers the mandolin, harmonica and vocals.

Recorded live on 28 January 1983 at Starry Night, Portland, Oregon, using a soundboard feed to a Nakamichi 480 cassette deck. Tom Robinson was at the board. The left channel held the vocals and harmonica, while the right channel held the guitar and mandolin. The tape was recorded somewhat hot, causing some distortion.

In April 2009 I transferred the master tape to 24bit/48000hz PCM. In May I remastered that transfer to cleanup tape noise and clicks, to minimize the distortion, and to remix the channels. The results bring home a steller performance by these two long-time members of The Band.

I’ve included some simple artwork for a CD label and cover. The front photo is from the show and is the work of Fred Carneau.

This is a much more complete
compilation of the No Reason To Cry sessions
that many of us have. The back cover and the
front inside cover indicate who was the main
vocalist for each song.
