Notes:
The goal of this collection is to round up one-offs, rarities, novel arrangements, and lesser-known tracks from Bob Dylan’s 1976 tour. The idea is that a fan whose 1976 collection consists of the 4-5 common soundboards from this year (New Orleans, Fort Worth, etc.) can grab this compilation and have most of the unique songs that don’t appear on any of those more famous bootlegs. It’s not a truly complete collection of ’76 rarities, but (still being a CD guy) I found in preparing the compilation that tightening it up to a packed single disc made for a more satisfying listening journey than stretching it out to two shorter ones. So, missing are a couple of one-offs which got the ax due to sound quality (“Most Likely You Go Your Way” from 4/22 and “One Of Us Must Know” from 5/19/76), and a handful of other songs that were technically rarities for ’76 but were setlist regulars in ’75 and didn’t sound different enough in their ’76 iterations to merit bumping anything here.

What’s left is an 80-minute program of prime, if somewhat stealth, ’76 Rolling Thunder Revue. Some of these performances are well-documented on others’ compilations; some were surprises to me and hopefully will be to you, too. I have made no changes to these recordings, apart from adding fade-ins and -outs for continuity. Thanks as ever to the original tapers, the uploaders who’ve helped preserve the legacy of the recordings, and to the Bobserve website for making it so easy to sort songs by year and by times played — it made tracking these down way easier than combing endlessly through setlists (fun as that always was)!

Happy listening! KD 9/11/23

Notes: Kingfish was fundamentally different to the more celebrated bands that Bob Weir and Dave Torbert hailed from. They clearly dug deep into their mutual love of American roots music to fashion a repertoire that established Kingfish as its own entity. The setlist performed here reflects the soul of their repertoire and finds Weir enjoying a brief sojourn from his obligations with the Grateful Dead while they took a well-earned break.

As for Bob Weir, nobody was really sure what a hiatus for the Dead meant, and Kingfish could have blossomed if the Dead had remained on the bricks, but Weir had a fantastic few hundred hours jamming with friends as this performance easily shows.

Klondike proudly presents the entire original WLIR-FM broadcast of Bob Weir with Kingfish live at Calderone Concert Hall, Hempstead, NY from 27th March 1976.

Professionally re-mastered original broadcast with background liners and rare archival photos! An exceptional celebration of the American songbook and a valuable addition for fans of NRPS and Grateful Dead.

Set I

Notes:

The first set is from a SBD master cassette source and has some hiss. The second set is from the master reel source. Levels are slightly different between the sets but same as the original sources – the master reel had more dynamic range.

Brief SBD cuts at the beginnings of the set openers. 1 minute cut in Big River and a 26-second cut in Dancing In The Streets.

SBD tuning sections were trimmed to match the AUD cuts, which still provided ample breaks between songs. (This creates a continuous AUD track.) Other tuning sections are added from the AUD source.

Click removed in Eyes Of The World.

A 20 second SBD section in Brown Eyed Women appears to be patched from a different show since it did not match the audience recording. The patch was preserved for continuity and the AUD fades out here for this brief moment.

Due to a brief AUD cut and some muffled sound, the Sony ECM-99A recording by Steve Hopkins patches the first 1:11 of Around And Around (#5982 transfer by Dave Minor, Dave Handrich and Matt Vernon, 7/12/03).

Dubwise Personal Notes: One of my favorite Bob shows. Its very special because its the first time his mother saw him perform.
He does some uncommon songs like Night Shift and Johnny Was and Jah Live. A lot of different talking between songs and lyrical changes.
Bob is in a great mood. Enjoy this remaster.

about the system. You know the system, what the system is? The system, the system! The system, you know? The system we’re living, the system!
