One of the things I really enjoyed when I was posting shows every day was posting certain artists on certain days of the week. I am a man of some organization. I like to have my ducks in a row as my mother likes to say. There was something nice about knowing that on Mondays I’d be posting Bob Dylan shows, and on Wednesdays, I’d post the Grateful Dead, etc. I kind of miss that.
So in my ever-changing plans on what to do with this blog, I thought it would be fun to try to do something similar again. No, I won’t be posting new shows every day and thus I won’t be posting Neil Young shows on Thursdays. But maybe I can post a Neil Young video on some Thursdays. Or links to interesting Neil Young news.
I like the idea anyway. So here’s a terrific version of one of my favorite Neil songs, “Cortez the Killer” in 1991.

Actually the sound where I was standing (front row / left) was at the venue better as it is on the recording (according to my opinion)
As security was right in front of me, I had to cover the microphones)
During the acoustic songs some noise caused by the electric motor of the fan on stage can be heard)
So far the best shows of the European Tour.
Neil / Poncho had a great crwowd response on Fuckin’Up. Neil was smiling all the time. They obviously had fun. Maybe the reason they changed / added some requested songs.

I was standing on the rail with my usual setup: Schopes mics, Nbox preamp and Edirol recorder. Just as The Horse hits the stage I notice that no signal was going into the recorder whatsoever! In a hurry I checked every connection, unplugged and plugged in again but with the same result. Nothing was being recorded. So in a split second decision I unplugged the mics, took out the recorder from my pocket and holding it in front of me to use it’s internal mics.
Hence the first few seconds of Love And Only Love is missing. Also stupidity I plugged in again after a couple of minutes to check if there was a singnal now. Of course it wasn’t. So there’s a 4 second gap at about 2 minutes in in Love And Only Love because of this.
It was quite a task doing all this on the rail, with a security guy right in my face. I had to hide the recorder while still having it as much in the open as possible trying not to obstruct the sound. It’s a wonder he didn’t spot it 😉
Needless to say, the sound on this isn’t what I was expecting and hoping for. But after a little tweaking it’s quite listenable, even if there’s still some slight low end distortion and some hiss, particulary on the acoustic tracks. (Levels were not set up to use the internal mics obviously)
Finally, for those who care: Later I found out what was wrong: One of the four fresh 9v batteries in the mic preamp was completely dead, even though I’d checked them all before the show. Oh, well. Shit happens. And as we all know far bigger shits than this has happened with the tour now!
Anyway, enough of this technical rant. The music is the important thing. Enjoy the show! (One of the best Mr. Soul of the tour?)
