This was the last time, to date, that David Lindley has played SLO Brew. Sadly, the attendance at this show wasn’t good, with less than half capacity. As usual, Mr. Dave played a wicked slide and told some very amusing stories. Sometimes I think it’s Lindley’s stories that drive me to collect so many of his show recordings. This was the show where I met the taper known as DATCC, who sat next to me. So, there is also his source for this show (Sonic Studios DSP-6Ps >Sony TCD-D7), though I don’t know if he’s circulated it yet.

Memorial Day Free Concert Celebration

This was a free Memorial Day concert at the Cliffs in Pismo Beach, outdoors on a bluff right next to the ocean. My friend Abe was celebrating a birthday there with a ‘silly hat’ party. (Photos included, shot by the taper with a Nikon D300 with 80-200 f/2.8 AF Nikkor and a 20 mm f/2.8 AF Nikkor. Included with the band are shots of Abe with his silly ‘fish head’ hat, as well as the taper’s wife [dressed in silly hat] with her dachshund Chloe. Even the taper got into the act, dressed in full tie die and holding Chloe.) Abe knew Lech, one of the band members, and asked him if I could plug into the board and he said no worries. As mentioned previously, the output that I plugged into was turned off, I didn’t know the board or its controls, and the sound man (Kip Stork from SLO Brew) was busy and it took seven minutes to get his attention and for him to find the level pot to turn on the output. The band marched through the crowd during one song while continuing to play. Thanks so much to the band for allowing me to record through the board!

This, I believe, was the last time that I got to record Dick Dale. He played SLO Brew a lot, and once I wanted to go but I was sick and thought that I would cough all over the recording so I didn’t go. I think this was the show that he was bitching about the photos on the wall (large framed prints) and asked, ‘Well where is Mine?” and then someone pointed to his photo and he said, ‘Oh, OK then.” or something like that. I liked the old SLO Brew. You could usually walk in ‘wired up’, because there was no search, and just wait for the show to begin and hit record!
This was a recording that I had KlingKlang convert to FLAC for me, before I met Dennis Orr.

This was the second to last time that Mr. Dave played SLO Brew. He was back in November of 2012 but hasn’t played since, and the club is scheduled to close soon so I don’t know if he will be return. Sadly, Lindley’s show’s at SLO Brew haven’t sold well. The crowd at last one, in Nov. ’12, was less than half capacity. I have always loved the Middle Eastern sound of his music, his slide playing, and of course his very witty and imaginative stories.

This was a band that I saw advertised at SLO Brew and I jumped at the chance to see, and record them. They are made up of members from the band ‘Mother Hips’ and feature the sound of music from the California San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield in particular. The fact that they allowed recording was icing on the cake! I lost the first minute of the opener because my old Tascam DA-P1 had a hiccup and refused to go into record mode for a bit.
