Notes:

This was Natalie’s second-ever solo performance (she also performed at this same location on the previous day), serving as the opening act for Tracy Chapman. Most songs are Natalie performing entirely alone, accompanying herself on piano, although there is cello on at least one song and possibly some limited acoustic guitar on another. Tracy Chapman performs with Natalie
on the final track.

This recording is interesting not only for the rare solo performances of older songs, such as “Everyone a Puzzle Lover”, “Lilydale”, and “Maddox Table”, but also for the unreleased song “After Talking to Myself”. There is at least one other recording of Natalie performing a partial version of that song, and it is available on the Chicago 4/14/88 recording (uploaded separately).

This show was part of the 1988 nineteen city “Christic Institute” benefit tour and does not appear to be widely circulated.

Quality on this one is average at best and suffers from the unknown generation source. The left channel was unusable and I had to turn it into a true mono capture before mastering which improved it tremendously from were we started. It is listenable but probably not one that will solicit repeat play. There is some borderline minor pitch variances throughout the show but I would not consider them a major issue to the overall listenability.

Danny O’Keefe opens with an 8 song solo set followed by comedian Bruce Crimmins. No real surprises to the set for this time period, we do get a nice “Our Lady Of The Well” to close the show.

Jackson forgets the words to “For America” and has to stop, jokes about it then restarts.

This was the first show that I recorded with my, at the time, brand new Sony WM-D6C PRO. I had purchased an adapter to convert the 1/4′ phone plugs from my microphones to work with the 1/8″ stereo microphone input but I had inadvertently bought a headphone adapter and didn’t realize that it only worked in one direction and was not compatible for my purpose. I was frantic when sound checking my gear to find that I was only getting one channel so I had no choice but to take a patch from the taper to my left who was also using a D6 and running AKG microphones. A BIG thanks to whoever that taper was, because I have long ago forgotten.

I have ticket stubs, and my ex wife Nikki’s handwritten set list in my setlist book, for the previous night’s show on December 28 at the Coliseum, so I was definitely there, but I have no idea why I didn’t at least try to record that one. I also included scans of those stubs, along with that set list, with this show from the 29th. It’s a mystery that I have no memory at all of. I definitely remember the 29th show as being the first time I had taken a patch from another taper (I liked to be self contained and use my own microphones) but if I was to have discovered that I had a problem with the cables for my new D6 I would have thought that it would have been apparent the night before on 12/28. I always tried to record every show I went to, starting with the Mother’s Day show at the Frost on 5/11/86. If I had found the problem with the microphones at the first show, I don’t know why I didn’t at least try to get a patch the night before, but maybe I wasn’t able to buy the adapter until the 29th. Who knows. (These things bother me.) 😉

After recording the 12/29/88 Dead show at the Coliseum, and apparently watching the 12/28/88 show, we trouped off to San Francisco on the 30th to see Hot Tuna acoustic at the Fillmore on the off night. I didn’t attempt to record that one because I still didn’t feel comfortable attempting a stealth recording yet, (my first stealth show wasn’t until Miles Davis at Cal Poly SLO in 1990), but I helped out my friend Dick who took in his Marantz PMD-430 in while ace bandaged to his lower back and padded with hotel towels. The doorman kept patting him down and said, ‘You’re really tight. Do you work out?’ and he said ‘Yeah’. Too funny! My friend Taper Ron tried to bring his D6 into the Fillmore and they found it on the pat down and made him bring it back to the truck. I remember the bouncers that kept coming by and shining flashlight beams under all the cocktail tables, where we were sitting. I don’t know if they were looking for drugs, alcohol, or taping gear, or maybe any and all of the above. At the end of the show I took the master tape out with me because Dick, Dave, and their friends were also staying for the late show and all Ron, Nikki and I had tickets for was the early show and Dick wanted the master tape from the early set to be safe. Looking back now his recording was really poor and I was happy to eventually find digital soundboards of both the early and late Tuna sets. On the way back to Oakland we stopped at Giant Burger for a late dinner. We recorded the Dead’s New Year’s Eve show off of KFOG FM from Ron’s house in Oakland, so at least I felt I was a part of all of those shows in that run. Later, I bought good quality Switchcraft adapters to use my Superscope EC7s with my new D6 and was all set for the February ’89 Kaiser Dead shows.

I think this was the first time that I used Metal Tape, as my Sony TC-153SD was built before that formulation was available.

This was my second time recording the Dead at Shoreline. The previous year, in 1987, I came home with really good sounding tapes that had a lot of punch and impact, being that they were recorded with the addition of the repeater towers on the lawn. In 1988 they moved the tapers section to Section 202, in the reserved section, directly behind the soundboard. We were a little closer to the stage PA, but we lost the addition of the repeater towers. When I ordered tickets through the Dead office I put a note in my mailer and requested to be next to ‘Taper Ron’ Owensby, my friend in Oakland who I stayed with when I went to Bay Area shows. I was blown away to see Ron walk up and have a reserved seat RIGHT next to me, in Section 202 Row E, the first row behind the board and front row of the tapers section! THANK’S GDTS!!!! 🙂

I will never forget, being in the first row of the tapers section, when Dan Healy passed his headphones to a lady to the left of my friend Ron during ‘To Lay Me Down’ in the first set. She listened to the board mix for a bit, and I was sure that she was going to pass them to my friend Ron, and then hopefully I would get a turn. But instead, she handed them right back to Healy and that was that. Shucks! I would have loved to have heard the board mix, even if only for a brief bit. She wasn’t even a taper and she got to experience that. I’m sure, looking back, that Healy only let her listen because she was a pretty girl.

I was having some trouble with my Sony 153, which turned out to be a dirty record switch as reported by the electronics repair shop, so I had borrowed a Marantz PMD-430 from my friend Dick, another taper I knew. (My guess would be the dust clouds from Ventura Fairgrounds ’87 being the culprit.) I would eventually get the Sony TC-153SD deck working again, but in the meantime I got a new Sony WM-D6C PRO for Christmas ’88, because I wanted a new deck and I wanted something that I could record other bands with and the 153 was just too large to take in for stealth shows.

I hadn’t transferred this show, Oct 1 1988, until now because the first time I was going to transfer it to CD with my HHb CDR 800 about 10 or 12 years ago I found that the master tape of the first set had print through, but listening now it seems like it only affected the early part of the set, between ‘Minglewood’ and ‘Peggy-O’, where you can hear an echo in the quiet part of the tuning between songs. I was pleasantly surprised that the rest of the recording sounded so good. The second set doesn’t seem to be affected at all.
