This was the show that I recorded with my Nakamichi CM 300s >D5 up in the tapers section and my friend Jack, who I got my D5 and Nyquist Omni’s from, taped up front. (The Nyquist Omni’s were custom-loaded capsules mounted in a baseball-type hat and built by an out-of-work at the time electrical contractor in Denver. Jack had one and I had one as well, and still do. Thankfully mine was rebuilt by Flying M after it died at a Neil Young concert in the early 2000s.

This was also the show where I first saw a Sony TCD-D7 DAT, The D7 was the first Sony DAT that would run on regular AA alkaline batteries, whereas the TCD-D3 used a rechargeable battery. I wasn’t able to afford a D7 until May of 1995 so in the meantime I used the D5 for live recording.

I guess I liked Jack’s FOB DAT far better than my tapers section masters because I can’t find my tapes anywhere. I would have liked to have also recorded up front but this was back in the days before cell phones were common and there was no way that I could get a hold of him. I remember that he came up to the balcony after the show with his friend John. Though I would return to record two later New Year’s Eve concerts when The Other Ones played in 2000 and 2002, this was the last time that I saw / recorded the Grateful Dead at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

Jack Copied his DAT shortly after the show and I transferred it with my Tascam DA-30 and HHb CDR 800 CD recorder and converted those discs to FLAC. There were two nasty errors in the master tape near the beginning of ‘Spoonful’ that I repaired by patching 54 seconds from the FOB Neumann KM140 source, ID # 141525.

Jack mentions me in the ‘walk out’ and says, ‘Let’s go find…’. He and his friend John came up to the tapers section as I was packing down. Feel free to delete the last track if you so choose. I used my taper ticket stub for the artwork.

This was the second to last time that I recorded the Grateful Dead at the Oakland Coliseum. I recorded the 12/18/93 Dead show in the tapers section at the Coliseum but those tapes are missing from my collection. I have the ticket stub, but that’s all. My friend Jack recorded the 12/18/93 show up front with the Nyquist Omni’s >TCD-D3 DAT, and I’m sure that I thought his recording sounded better than mine so I most likely ditched my tapes.

I couldn’t find the ticket stub to the 12/11/92 show, but at least I still had the tapes in my cassette collection. I can remember being in the tapers section of the 12/18/93 Oakland show because that’s when I first saw a new Sony TCD-D7 DAT recorder. I wouldn’t be able to afford one until May of 1995. (I’ve recorded the Dead at the Oakland Coliseum Arena a lot over the years and they all seem to run together in a blur.) I always thought that 5/22/93 Shoreline was my first show mastered with my D5, but apparently this one was, because I bought the D5 from my friend Jack in late 1992 when he switched to DAT. I remember that I used the D5 to record James Cotton through the board at the SLO Vets’ Hall and liked the loud headphone amp because it made it easier to monitor the sound. Thanks to my friend Dave for the use of his Denon cassette deck so could transfer all my cassette masters that hadn’t been completed before. I don’t believe that this show has ever been shared, or at least not for a long time.

These shows were kind of a let down, emotionally, after Bill Graham’s passing in the helicopter accident a few months previous. I recorded the 10/27/91 and 10/31/91 shows on the Halloween run. 10/27 was very somber, as it was the first Dead show since Bill’s death, opening with Bill’s favorite song Sugar Magnolia. 10/31/91 was perhaps the most intense Dead show I’ve ever seen, with a stellar song selection and even a visit from Ken Kesey to mark the passage of Bill’s life.

The 12/27/91 show was decent, in my memory, in both song selection/playing and in the recording. It was always nice to see a Scarlet >Fire, and I liked Bobby’s rendition of Dylan songs such as Memphis Blues. Music Never Stopped to end the first set was always a favorite, and the Cold Rain & Snow opener was always to be expected on a cold Oakland night.

I had tickets for the 12/31/91 show, and hoped to record from the OTS. Still, even with priority tickets, we still found ALL of the tapers section had been saved with coats/tape, by the time we got inside. As I remember, few tapers got into the section that night. It was mostly non tapers. We had to sit up in the nosebleeds on Jerry’s side and I didn’t tape at all, even though I had my little Sony quartz lock FM tuner as a back up. I was just too disgusted. The NYE celebration was really lame too, since Bill was not there. All they did was show old NYE Dead footage on the big screen.

This was the first and last time that I ever was present to record all four shows of the Grateful Dead NYE run, and the last time that I used my Sony TC-153SD cassette portable to master a show. I still miss Brent terribly, but I thought that Bruce Hornsby did a great job adding color to the band with tunes like ‘Valley Road’, to close out the first set. I remember experimenting with different microphone set ups on that run. I think I ran a different combo for the first couple of nights, but for the cavernous Oakland Coliseum, I thought that two Nakamichi CM-300 shotguns sounded best from the tapers section. It would be another eight years until I was able to upgrade to Neumann microphones so at the time, my CM-300×3 set was the best I had available. I still miss that trek to Oakland every December that we used to make to catch the New Years shows. Man was it cold and windy! Every time I hear Traffic’s ‘Rock And Roll Stew’, I think of tearing down my recording equipment after a Dead show in Oakland. Healy used to play that song for the house music after the show.
