Show of the Day: Grateful Dead – New York, NY (09/19/70)

There is an app called Relisten which takes all the shows in the Live Music Archive and lets you stream them on your phone. It does a nice job of organizing them so you can browse by artist and search through each year, etc. One of my favorite things it does is when you click on an artist it will show you all the shows they played on that particular day.

On my drive to work, I often listen to a Grateful Dead show they played on whatever day it happens to be and this has been a really fun way of catching up with shows I might have missed.

I love the idea of having a show of the day on this site, so that’s one of the many ideas I have percolating through my little brain. I’m not sure if I’d like to talk about shows that happened to be performed on the day I happen to be writing about it, or maybe I could just choose one show to talk about each day.

Trouble would be being able to have the time to listen to an entire show and have something to say about it each day. I have no idea if I’ll actually regularly do something like that, but today I have something.

I meant to talk about it yesterday and forgot. In fact, I don’t have much to say about it except that you should listen to it.

On September 19, 1970 the Grateful Dead played a monster shows in New York City’s Fillmore East auditorium. They started with Sugar Magnolia and then launched into one of the all-time great jam-filled medleys: Dark Star>Not Fade Away>Darkness Jam>China Cat Jam>Not Fade Away>Turn On Your Lovelight.

It is about 70 minutes of the best music you’ll hear today. You can download it from me here, or stream it on the Archive here.

Set I

Notes:

The first set is from a SBD master cassette source and has some hiss. The second set is from the master reel source. Levels are slightly different between the sets but same as the original sources – the master reel had more dynamic range.

Brief SBD cuts at the beginnings of the set openers. 1 minute cut in Big River and a 26-second cut in Dancing In The Streets.

SBD tuning sections were trimmed to match the AUD cuts, which still provided ample breaks between songs. (This creates a continuous AUD track.) Other tuning sections are added from the AUD source.

Click removed in Eyes Of The World.

A 20 second SBD section in Brown Eyed Women appears to be patched from a different show since it did not match the audience recording. The patch was preserved for continuity and the AUD fades out here for this brief moment.

Due to a brief AUD cut and some muffled sound, the Sony ECM-99A recording by Steve Hopkins patches the first 1:11 of Around And Around (#5982 transfer by Dave Minor, Dave Handrich and Matt Vernon, 7/12/03).

Upgrade. Source(s) MR>?>Hi-Fi Stereo VHS>WAV>Soundforge (Editing)>WAV>CDR>EAC>FLAC

This is a tagged version of shnid: 106505

There were at least Three different audio edits of this material used over three different
audio/video edits of the Acid Test Video. Each one had audio not available on the other
versions. I spent a couple weeks carefully tracking all the seperate edits and tracking them.
I used the first release as the main audio. It sounded the best quality to me. Source two was
mono (for unknown reasons), but you will notice audio not available on the other two versions.
Version three had the most overdubs of segments played on top of others, but still had a few
snippets worth adding to this collection. Removing all the duplicate music tracks, here’s everything
that was worth saving from each version. Everything fits on one CDR, but it would be great of someone
could try to edit them together with better audio editing software than I have to work with.

Someone should try to use upgrade the audio to the film Sunshine Daydream with this Stereo version of I’m A King Bee!
