The source info, according to Ted: The Museum of TV & Radio in NYC dubbed his original reel-to-reel tape and a friend converted it to CDR.

Or, in more detailed fashion:

museum of tv & radio in nyc dubbed the original reel
to reel on to cassette for their listening archives
(museum of tv & radio in beverly hills also gets
copies).

a friend converted it to cdr also from the original
reel to reel (lost touch with him and never knew how
he converted analog to digital)

i recorded it at the kppc-fm 106.7 radio studio (at 99
south chester in pasadena, california near cal tech)
during the live broadcast on a scully tape deck (at
7.5 ips on quarter inch two track stereo 1.5 mil
acetate scotch audio tape); when the nrps song
louisiana lady was played on the scully tape deck in
the radio studio during the interview, the scotch
audio tape was moved to a similar scully tape deck in
the kppc-fm production studio down the hall to
continue taping the live broadcast; music played from
lps on turntables was scoped by stopping the tape
during the broadcast to make sure that the entire
interview would fit on our only blank tape available
at the time on a sunday afternoon.

peace, ted

– d1, I removed most of the dead air as quite frankly, it was an annoyance. boosted level by 4.48 decibels in right channel. a small section was cut from the start of d1t03, where there was distortion. hiss reduction was applied throughout.
– d2, t02 a number of volume adjustments in both channels, t03 some volume adjustments in first 2:13 minutes, t07 boosted both channel by 3 decibels. t08 boosted right chaneel by 2 decibels. closed several small gaps between t05 & t06. hiss reduction applied throughout
– a few miscellaneous clicks removed
– final mastering with iZotope Ozone

comments from Deadlists Project:

This is Crosby, Garcia, Lesh & Hart, sometimes known as David And The Dorks. SET 1 is an afternoon rehearsal and soundcheck. SET 2 is the live set.

Jerry Garcia & Friends were advertised at the Matrix on December 15, 16 & 17. In the pause after the snatch of Eight Miles High vocals rehearsal Crosby is heard asking someone to “put limiters on it. I overblew their mics last night.” The comment implies he’s talking on the second night of the run, which would make this the 16th rather than the 15th; however, these tapes have always circulated dated “12/15/70.”

The first four tunes are all Crosby’s. The Jam out of Triad is choice. Bertha is a very early version with a few bungled lyrics. Deep Elem Blues is a unique arrangement heavily influenced by Crosby’s rhythm guitar.

Original Uploader Matt’s notes:

Of course this is mere speculation but… This show is comprised of 3 diff. reels. The GD set is on the High Country reel, another reel is listed as 7-30-70 and the third, 4-30-70. Obviously the GD part and the 7-30-70 go together but I beleive the 4-30-70 is the second half of the New riders show. the mix is the same and all the songs are different and back then there were certain tunes they always played every show. Another reason is if they actually played on 4-30 then that would mean they would have a gig the next night in New York opening for the Dead! My guess is that the bill was listed as a New Riders with a few GD members there who just wanted to practice a few new tunes in the beginning of the night then let the New Riders play the rest. Let the debate begin!!

Notes from the original uploader:
Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it was
recorded in a studio setup.

The lineup is reportedly the following:
Jerry Garcia – Guitar
Jorma Kaukonen – Guitar
Jack Cassady – Bass
Mickey Hart – Percussion
Spencer Dryden – Percussion

Known Flaws:
A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 – 0:23
of track 01 was edited out using EAC’s wave editing function.
A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC.

Much thanks to Morgan Evans for putting this gem into my hands!

1. jam // 13:18
2. jam // ^ 33:54

Notes from the original uploader:

I asked Michael Parrish for a copy of the mystery fragment reviewed in the taping compendium. This tape also included another fragment not reviewed in the compendium and was labeled 11 1 68, which is most likely incorrect.

* Here?s what Parrish supplied for source / lineage info: ?Both of these pieces came in a cassette that Dwork sent me near the beginning of the compendium project. As I noted, track #2 corresponds to the first track of your “Mystery Disc” and I have never heard the other piece anywhere other than on the Dwork tape. It rang no bells with Dick L. either.?

^ ?The fragment I sent you as ?11/1/68? is the same as the first track on your Mystery Show CD. I wouldn’t necessarily bet that either is 11/1/68 though:)?

Review by Michael Parrish: ?This mysterious fragment consists of another version of the jam that opens 10/30/68. It is notable for Garcia?s inspired and frenetic soloing, which has a rather unusual Latin feel.?

JJ
first Jam has some Cold Rain & Snow & GDTRFB flavor to it
second jam starts with Dark Star flavor

track 02 is 12/16/68
