As per usual, I’m behind on posting these things. The trouble with posting the things I write on Cinema Sentries to this blog is that I write something over there, but it doesn’t get posted until the owner has a look at it and hits publish. Sometimes, he does that the same day, and other times, he waits a while, depending on when the thing I’m writing about comes out.
Once I’ve submitted it I tend to forget all about it. That’s not too big a deal with most things, but when I’m talking about this week’s new releases it’s a little silly to post it on the Saturday after the release date. Yet here we are.
It was a good release week but I chose a bit of childhood nostalgia for my pick. You can read all about it here.
My wife was a medical massage therapist for a pain doctor and one day she brought home a 45 rpm record that one of the patients, who had become friends with her, had given her. She showed it to me and I saw that it was titled ‘Tom and Jerry’. I suddenly got really excited and asked her if she realized what this was! She said it was a record from the cartoon and what was the big deal?
I told her no, it was not from the cartoon, but was in fact the very FIRST Simon & Garfunkel single, recorded in 1957! It was, at that time, worth around $50 and might be worth more today. That was probably 20 years ago that she brought it home.
That’s a fun story, thanks for sharing. What a find!
Thanks Mat…what better way to forget about what’s happening in the USA…then to grab a bowl of Frosted Flakes with milk and start my Saturday watching Tommy & Jerry toons.
Indeed. I want to stay informed but I’ve learned I can’t spend my day in the news or I won’t sleep at night! Sometimes you need distractions of comfort.
Mat
I read your review of Tom And Jerry and remain intrigued by the fact that you make no mention of the censorship issue that saw these classic cartoons gutted because of their explicit violence! As a result of this censorship I refrained from purchasing them in DVD format. It is quite possible that you have never seen the originals and from reading your review I suspect this might be the case. I turn seventy this year and suspect that you are considerable younger!
I was not aware of the censorship. I have no idea if I saw the original or the censored versions. I’m gonna guess the censored versions as I watched it on TV in the 1980s.
I’m turning 49 next months so younger than you, but I sure don’t feel young 🙂
