I have two sources for this show.

1. SHNID 83906

2. Source: (OTS/Lawn/Center) Superscope EC-7 Cardioid Condensers (Near Coincident) >Sony TC-153SD Lineage: Cass/M > D5 > HHb 800 > EAC > CDWav > FLAC Recorded, Transferred: OldNeumanntapr Extraction: Brad Foster

End of Drums > Quinn is from a Cass/1 of the same source made shortly after the show. MC > Cass transferred via Toshiba PX-X10 > TC-153SD.

FLAC >WAV >Audacity (Combine Tracks To A One-Track File, Amplify By 5.2db, Re-Track On Original Index Points) >FLAC (Level 8) + Tags Via xACT 2.53 (And Front-Cover Artwork) By OldNeumanntapr

Notes: – Master paused between some songs in s1. – First few notes of Esau missing. – The last bit of Drums is cut. – See note above for tape info after Drums. – ‘Addams Family’ tuning before ‘Masterpiece.’ – Final version of ‘My Brother Esau.’ — Thanks to Jeff for sharing his master/transfer! — Thanks to Gene Juteau for sending his Cass/1 at the time of the transfer. All discs extracted in secure/range mode, seamlessly joined to one file and re-tracked by set. Enjoy!

OldNeumanntapr Notes: This was one of my favorite recordings. 1987 was the first Grateful Dead Shoreline shows. They were scheduled to play there in ’86, right after Ventura, but that entire tour was cancelled when Jerry went into the hospital. I still have the advertisement from the pink section of the SF Chronicle from the aborted Shoreline ’86 shows, as well as the GDTS information sheet from Ventura ’86. (I had to send in my mail order tix for a refund.) A lot of people dislike Shoreline, but I always thought that the sound there was amazing. Being a taper, that was always my first concern. I have way too many boomy audience masters from the Oakland Coliseum. I remember hearing stories of people who dropped their cigarettes on the grass in the general admission area of Shoreline that started small methane fires from all the decomposing garbage underneath. I think I still have my bootleg ‘Dead At The Dump’ T shirt. I remember that these shows were pretty good. This was the show that I met my friend Ron, who would forever be ‘Taper Ron’. He patched into my Sony TC-153SD up on the lawn. Those first Shoreline audience masters still sound pretty good even today, but I’m missing the last part of the Saturday second set after I loaned out the master and never got it back. Big mistake!

[August 2024 Remaster: I decided to work on these two recordings from Shoreline a bit to raise the levels, and to tag the files. To take advantage of Brad’s patches, I downloaded them from the Live Music Archive and then decoded the FLACs and assembled the WAV files together in Audacity. I was able to raise the levels about 5db or so and I think it gives the recording a bit more ‘punch’. I also changed to file names slightly to reflect ‘disc I’, ‘disc II’, ‘disc III’, instead of tracking by set. I removed and repaired the two-second drop out in ‘Bird Song’ with Audacity.

I always regret the fact that I turned down the offer from another taper who was to my left, up on the lawn in the tapers section, to patch into his Neumann TLM-170s >Sony PCM rig. I can’t remember the taper’s name, but I definitely remember those microphones! He said that JUST the isolation (shock) mounts were $400 EACH! He really liked my vintage Sony TC-153SD cassette recorder and suggested that I patch in, and like a FOOL I said that I wanted to be self contained and do it myself. I have never seen that source circulate, which is a shame that it was never shared. Maybe someday it will surface.]

Do NOT Convert To MP3. Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. 😉
