While I don’t appreciate Godfather’s work on most of their releases; this bootleg is my favorite source for the outstanding “Oh Mercy” outtakes. I think they managed to reduce the hiss, without ruining the music – unlike so many other times. The versions here differ from the released versions – to bigger and lesser extent.

    Can’t make up my mind whether this is actually the best source for these. Godfather do a fab job when they have a pure source without excessive hiss. These recordings are however quite noisy by nature – some say they were recorded ‘acoustically’ in the studio – in such circumstances everybody (even CBS et al) really struggle to denoise due to the shared frequebcies of top end of the spectrum. When confronted with hissy recordings Godfather usually prefer to use noise reduction along with amplification which results in a tight punchy sound but also inevitably to a loss of top end and ‘space’ in the recording. Their version of Zep at MSG 12 feb ’75 is a great example of this if you compare it with the other SBD sources available.
    Just a question of personal preference really, and no single approach will work universally well for all tracks anyway

    ps the material is howver universally excellent IMHO and in many cases trump the chosen released takes, as is so often the case with Bob’s later albums

    That’s not actually my comment, it came from the text file that I got with the show when I originally downloaded it. I have no opinion on Godfather sound.

    Just for interest, about the Godfather comment:
    Godfather tend to “remaster” very, very
    heavily – lots of EQing and compression. The results
    can sound impressive on eg an ipod, where eg a fairly decent aud might sound dull, but listen on a big stereo
    and all that “mastering” becomes clearly audible, the
    sound perhaps becoming edgy and thin.
    To be fair to Godfather they seem to be prepared often
    to work with poorer sources, rescuing what would otherwise be considered great material.
