  1. Yes! I’m gonna see him at the end of June as well. This is a really nice sounding aud recording. I knew this before I listened but most of the songs are unrecognizable from the studio versions. There are a couple where I was halfway through before I realized what song I was listening too.

I’m trying to get in the mindset of just grooving to the music before I go to the show so I won’t be disappointed that I can’t really sing along or that I wind up not knowing the songs.

  2. I last went to see Bob in 2007, I’ve passed on the last few tours (although I have heard a lot of shows) as I was getting really tired of the love and Theft material, a very average album IMHO. In fact i was already sick of most of it when i saw him in 2003, bob also seemed to be tired of it as the live versions became ever more humdrum and uninspired. I actually have more time for the more recent albums. However, Bob is far more limited vocally nowadays and the recent albums less varied accordingly.
My advice is to concentrate on these albums before you go. It is usually true that for any songwriter the current material is the stuff you wabt to hear in concert really, as this is the stuff they really want to play. This has always especially been true for Bob in particular, and never more so than now!
The thing that really grates with me is the unchanging and uninspired nature of the ‘encore’. It hasn’t changed noticeably in 6 years or more.
In short expect better than album versions of recent trax, a few ‘golden moments’, some unrecognizable classics and the usual encore. Whatever you do make sure you are not late. The most interesting stuff is often in the first 4 songs

  3. The only time I’ve seen him was with the Dead back in, well whenever that was about five years ago or so. Bob played keys the whole time and his voice often sounded like something died in his throat.

This year I’m seeing him at a festival deal with Bob Weir doing a solo show, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. I figure even if Dylan sucks I’ll still get my moneys worth out of the rest (especially Wilco they never disappoint.) But I don’t expect Dylan to suck. His band is always crackerjack so even if I can’t recognize the songs I can still sit back and dig on the performance.

Good advice though I know his new albums but I may give them some more spins just before the show.

  4. I’m sure you’ll have a good one. I have a compilation boot set (may be mp3) of those Dead shows with Bob. Ithought it was 2003 actually but as I recall it wasn’t great so I didn’t ‘file it’ too carefully in my mind. Bob’s voice was in awful shape in 2003, he sounded as if he had laringitus the whole time. I nearly walked out of the only london show i went to at Wembley. I was right next to the desk and the display meters and level sliders looked exactly the way it sounded, all mid range sliders had been zeroed and bottom and top end pushed to max!!
I gave the engineer an earfull as i recall but to no effect.
Much later I got a copy of the Crystal Cat – thought they must have been at a different gig the sound was fine and completely different. Very weird indeed!

Anway if all else fails you’ll dig Duke’s guitar playing!

  5. Well have a good show – and remember to take along
    your taping equipment🙂

The general consensus does seem to be that he is playing
better than he has done in a few years.

And it’s a hell of a bill. My Morning Jacket are a fabulous
band. They were the ones doing Going To Accapulco
in that (pretty dismal) I’m Not There film, as you may or may
    not remember.

I’m hoping that the context (Americana??) will bring out their
rootsier side, which I much prefer. And I’m also hoping that
the quality Bob tapers will give us some good MMJ for
    posterity as well.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but MMJ are cool with the circulation
of ‘home recordings’, and their section on Archive.org is prob
    second only to the Dead.

I can recommend 24th August, Stubb’s BBQ, Larry Pillman
    recording… and 16th August, Waterfront Park… there’s a few
good sounding recordings of that one. Both 2008. That’s one
of my favourite years… altho I didn’t think much of the new
album (as was), Evil Urges, it did have some great new songs
which found their way into the setlists…. Librarian, eg, and
    I want to thank you.

  6. Thanks very much for posting this!

Anyone happen to know if the 5/1 Charlotte show is available? I was there – my first Dylan show and, although the set list (I think) was identical to this one, I do like to collect the shows I’ve been to.

Thanks again, can’t wait to give this a listen.

  7. ERB in CLT

I’m sure it’s been torrented – not seen at T.U.B.E. or G101 yet, strange as most of the nights have been posted, including the 2nd May

Try a request to EDGE at T.U.B.E. although i’m sure he’ll post at some point

  8. Wow was the Dylan/Dead tour that long ago? Yeah, I guess it was. Dylan’s voice really was terrible that night. But the band was pretty tight.

If memory serves the Dead played a pretty mediocre show too. Not bad, just like they were bored. Think that was the last time I saw any of the surviving members too, though the Furthur boots I have are real good.

If I see the Dylan show ERB I’ll grab it for you.
