  1. Mat,
    If you report an intermittent (dropout) fault to your ISP, the processes they are required to run to check your connections at the exchange will, by default, force them to reset/reboot your connection. This will often resolve the issue and in many cases result in better speeds and more reliable throughput too. Good idea to do this from time to time anyway in my experience.

    I have this show but getting the proper lineage info is handy anyway

  2. Just turned on the radio and there is Mr Bragg talking nonsense about the now late, and always great, Pete Seeger. It really is stretching a point to claim that he ‘wrote’ We Shall Overcome. Co-adapted might be a more appropriate term. A bit like saying he ‘wrote’ Turn Turn Turn!
    Why csn’t people be remembered for the right reasons. You know like inspiring and mobilising and almost defining a movement. Also for standing up to Hoover and his cronies, for organising the Newport Folk Festival, being a great artist and for being one of the best banjo players ever in folk music.
    Oh and for being too nice a human being to ever put Woody down publicly, even though he didn’t really like him for the way he treated his nearest and dearest.

    Not too long ago I was listening to a great recording of his 90th birthday gig. He sounded frail, but he still sounded like Pete – wish i’d been there!
    Greatness comes in many forms, and deserves far better grammar than i’ve managed here.

  3. I have to admit I cried when I read the news this morning. What I loved about Mr. Seeger (well one of the things anyways) is how his concerts were events. It wasn’t about him standing up and singing, it was about everybody singing and dancing and feeling the joy.

    Rest in peace indeed.

  4. I’ve heard nothing from Arlo so far. It’s a measure of Pete the man that he could bridge political divides and bring people together. I should say for those unaware that Arlo is no socialist, a Republican in fact, a nice Republican and I can’t imagine him being onboard with the more extreme current groupings, but no socialist. As far as I’m aware Pete remained true to his leftish leanings throughout his life.
    They spent so many years touring together, maybe he is just feeling too bad at the moment to comment.

  5. I wrote this several years ago in reviewing a bootleg of Seeger’s.

    “There are many thoughts that come to mind when I hear the name Pete Seeger: Socialist, outspoken folkie, encyclopedic knowledge of music worldwide, compatriot to Woody Guthrie, Pinko-Commie, and axe-wielding madman running after an electrified Bob Dylan. It is his love and gift for folk music from around the globe, though, that I hope he will always be remembered.

    Listening to Pete Seeger, in concert, is like being with a historian and archaeologist of the world’s music. He seems to know every song ever sung, and to be friends with their writers and singers. He is the soul of America, a true treasure trove of song.

    I have a handful of concerts by Seeger, some official, others not, and in every one is a historical road map of folk. Though he often plays by himself, with banjo for accompaniment, he is never short of musicians, for he makes everyone in the audience part of the band. No, Pete Seeger concerts are not Holy Places where the music is sacred, and the audience mere worshipers. We are part of the song, singers and clappers and performers one and all. In nearly every song, he points out a chorus, or a repeating line that he encourages the audience to sing. Where they can’t sing, he says they can clap and hum.”

    I recommend that anybody who is unfamiliar, seeks out the live recordings with Arlo, both official and unofficial.

    Your point about Pete being ‘a true treasure trove of song’ is well made. in many ways he was a white, more folk-oriented version of Leadbelly although thay came from different worlds and had very different pasts. A true walking songbook in the great folk tradition.
