Contains one of the last versions of Playing without Donna. She’s present on the 27th (Dick’s Picks Vol. 30 version). My favorite Playing of this run is the 22nd, but the 23rd is the last one before Donna added her influence. These are very good versions. To my ears, these performances of Playing are a lot like the two Fillmore East releases (Ladies & Gentlemen ’71 and 2/11/69 Early + Late Show) in the power is in the speed at which they really go in and out of spaces in a hurry. Some mighty swell music!

I’ve been really enjoying his stripped-down picks… saves me racking my brains trying to remember which shows I like
