  1. ‘Schubert’ is my absolute favourite of the regular tapers. I really love the work that ;Spot’ and ;Soomlos’ and some others do. I really appreciate their efforts to record and to share their truly excellent work. All the tapers have a signature sound (leaving aside the obvious considerations of venue acoustics, seating position etc) which obviously depends on the equipment they use. It;s just that to my ears Schubert’s recordings have a particulrly ‘lush’ sound that really appeals to me. This is obviously a PURELY subjective thing. Spot’s recordings are very clean with great separation of the instruments etc, Soomlos produces recordings with great dynamics and a terrific stereo sound stage. For me however Schubert’s work has the edge (just)

    You might think therefore that i will be rushing to d/l this. But actually i will not be rushing as this show was included in the awesome Crystal Cat set of recs for 2000 – in fact this particular show has EVEN BETTER sound than the average for that set of recs which is set at an extremely high level.

    This is not to put down Schubert’s efforts. Crystal Cat use their own multiple AUD captures with professional mics and then mix down these recs in a studio to produce a stereo master with much professional post prodn and mastering. Therefore it is simply impossible for any taper (no matter how good!) to compete with their releases. It also explains why their releases are so often mistaken for soundboard recs. Truth is they are usually far better than most SBDs

    Might still poll it down and have a listen though, it is a great show

  2. I agree DylanDave – Schubert is one of the very best!! All of these legendary tapers – including the others you named, and other kind souls who tape and share so freely – are pretty amazing, what they can capture on a good night…
