Just received this CDR in a trade…”Yeah man…Jerry Band on a big boat in the bay from ’87, you’d dig it”….and while I had my doubts about this, after a listen I can confirm that it certainly sounds like 87 era JGB and after checking thejerrysite.com (bless them, nice people) I can also confirm that this is the show from March 6, 1987. I took a look at the bt.etree show listings and this did NOT seem to be listed anywhere this newbie could find it….so I’m going ahead an up’ing it here for further review……

Anyone got ANY ideas how JGB ended up doing a set on the USS Carl Vinson on a Friday in March 1987? Love to hear the tale…..

Sound quality is listenable, though spotty at times. Certainly worth the download, especially if you consider yourself a boat buff…..

(includes a nice JPEG of the USS Carl Vinson in the Bay!)

too bad we haven’t converted more aircraft carriers to floating concert venues……

notes:

I downloaded this show on a bit torrent from EZT.
There were small gaps between each track. I reconstituted into one large file, then eliminated a few minor clicks. I also boosted the level in the left channel slightly and re-mastered using Wavelab and several plugins (mostly iZotope Ozone).

Comments:

Before this appeared on EZT I’d never seen this show in circulation. There are a number of minor flaws but it’s a very enjoyable show!

Tracked with CD Wave and shns with mkwACT

  1. Errrm… it’s a warped logic which “punished” Jerry by
ordering him to play a gig 🙂

  2. Indeed. I guess they figured what else could this old fat guy do? I would have loved to see the reactions of these old navy guys watching Jerry jam on their big military boat.

  3. I had this picture in a folder and always wondered if there was a tape. Hooray! Thanks for sharing.

  4. Matt Thank You Again Ten Million Times for sharing your incredible Van Morrisson collection….still celebrating his 75th, and will be doing so all year by listening to “new” concerts everyday…..you probably know this, but when I arrived in Fairfax in the mid 70’s, Van’s parents quietly ran a mom and pop record shop, and Van could be seen around town now and then…he dropped into some of the music joints when they had R&B legends. I had a tea time, silent neurotic telepathic chat, with him once at a cafe called La Belle Muse (he didn’t want to talk about music after acknowledging my mandolin/folkie roots)…he was deep in thought, hard at work staring at the trees and sky, finding a new song… so we sat together for tea and I excused myself and let his concentrate…then I saw his show at GAMH, (this stuff happened sometime in the mid 80’s)…he did the bit about “Mr. Lawrence” and that’s when I realized he’s such a way gone cat, daddio….I really didn’t get it at all about him being a jazz genius, and his vocal being a trumpet…so now, Thanks to you, I am attending Sir Ivan Academy for my PHD….devoting a terabyte to getting it all while it’s here…some of your peers have had some delectable dishes that I drool over, but they do not post as prolifically as yourself and they are catty about leaving teasers for dead-end links…I never made it to Lion’s Share, the son of the proprietor left a comment on a Van youtube clip…a legend worthy of commemoration…HOW DO YOU FIND THE NEWSPAPER ADS/CALENDARS FOR THE NIGHTCLUBS ?

    1. What a cool story. I’ve never been able to see Van live. He never comes anywhere near me. I have many more Van shows to post so stick around.

For Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan I find the ads and posters are a few websites that specifically collect that stuff. Just google “jerry garcia stubs” or “bob dylan stubs” and you should be able to find them. For everyone else the art work either comes with the show or I just google the artists + city or venue + year and hope to find something.
