The popular theory is that all 91 concerts are rubbish & the popular theory is wrong.
There is also a view that there are a few decent concerts buried in the mess of the 91 US Fall tour.
So what is really happening here if we are objective about it & stick to the facts from the circulating tapes.
Over four weeks (28 days), Bob performed 21 concerts & played 65 songs (25 of them only once or twice).
The songs are very well performed & two-thirds of the concerts are circulating in very good to excellent sound.
The Donald Duck on helium vocals from earlier in the year are absent.
Bob & the band play enthusiastically, coherently & consistently.
Like most Bob things from 91, someone has a wacky theory –
the most weird one about the vocals is that it took Bob’s sinuses almost a year to recover from all the Traveling Wilburys coke.
I have no idea, but the improvement in the vocals is dramatic.
The constant experimentation with the songlist shows Bob focused on what he is doing, & doing it well.
These are very good to excellent performances in very good to excellent sound.
There is no typical Fall 91 concert setlist – it changed considerably every night.
Every song played during Fall 91 is represented here.

  1. After suffering emotional and musical bruising (possibly permanent) from the earlier euro leg of the tour, it took me a long long time to get around to checking out the later US shows. Having said that the notes are fair enough for the most part. Trouble is the non-standard aspect. It really just depended on which show/tape arrived thru the letter box. It was a good time to revisit the 89 NET shows and go looking for missing links as i recall. Nobody was interested in these shows at all. In retrospect this was a mostly decent tour which led into some excellent gigs ‘down under’ and elsewhere.
I genuinely think that listening to it in this expansive, but thoroughly ‘raked over’ form could be a bit of a revelation for me.

I seem to recall you posting a few decent gigs from this tour leg here before Mat.

Thanks for posting, not seen this one on my rounds

  2. Thanks for posting this. It will be good to hear this stuff. 1991 concerts can be very entertaining, often for the wrong reasons, but what has amazed me in that even in the so called ‘bad concerts’ there are moments of lucidity too. It will be interesting to hear him in a more ‘together’ state. With the mention of the ‘downunder’ concerts of 92, mentioned above by Dylandave, that brings back recollections of various people I know who saw these gigs. He was not very well at that point, either!

  3. Hey Midnight Cafe, Do you know of there are any circulating tapes out there from “Planet Wave” sessions/outtakes??? Never have seen any and it’s such a rich period of music with The Band.

  4. Just to pick a couple of nits, the arena at Northwestern University is called McGaw Hall, not McCaw, and we don’t put a “The” in front of “Northwestern” (that’s an Ohio State thing!).
