– As Vassar is in the band the date would be after July 1973.

Notes:

– There is a dropout in the right channel of “Old And In The Way Breakdown” of just over a second so I’ve copied the left channel over.
– “That High Lonesome Sound” fades out.

  1. So when I listen to this, the version of the Hobo Song is remarkably identical to the version on the first O&ITW album. I have listened to that vinyl a thousand times and this one starts the same, has the same banjo break and the same “huh hoo hoo” by Peter towards the end. If so, that would place these recordings at the Boarding House in SF on Oct 1 and 7, 1973. I just looked up the full recording box set that Grisman issued 5 years ago and the middle part of the song sequence (except for Hobo Song and High Lonesome Sound) is right there on Disc 4 That would date this recording as 107/73. That’s my Sherlock Holmes effort for the day! Thanks Mat – you are the best at sharing these gems with us!!

  2. Oops, I meant to write 10/8/73, which is what the cover of the box lists as the second recording date. As further evidence, I would point out that this show is the only time I’ve seen “You’ll Find Her Name Written There” in an O&ITW set list and that song was played on Disc 4 of the Box Set right after all the other songs in this set list. Seems to me to very likely be the correct date.
