We lost one of the great ones yesterday. John Prine was a songwriter’s songwriter. A true poet. His songs were irreverent, hilariously funny, sad, and poignant, often in the same line.
I’ve only got a few of his shows, but I thought I’d share them here
“When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I’ll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin’
Just five miles away from wherever I am”
Seeing John at the 2002 Newport Folk Festival made me a fan for life. I went there for 3 or 4 other acts, but came away remembering John’s set to this day. Here’s a folder of about 20 shows, all 320K MP3’s, most SB’s of very good to excellent quality. All (I think) have the original info files included. Grab any or all of them to post here in the Cafe, or just let readers link to my FileFactory folder. As many folks as possible should enjoy this great music.

Very cool. Thank you. I think I’ll just let your link sit here and anyone who wants the shows can grab them from you.
Thanks for this. TBH I didn’t know much about him until recently when I heard he was sick, and the accolades started pouring in. Anyone who gets the seal of approval from Dylan and Springsteen has got to be legit.
He really is a fantastic songwriter. Highly recommended. Start with his first album and realize he was only 25 when it came out. Those songs are so wise for someone so young. But really you can’t go wrong with anything he ever wrote.
Hi Mat, I can no longer get into the midnight cafe site, even though it shows I am registered, did I lose my permission?Gary
This one hurts; thanks Mat.
Hi Mat,
I was so sad when I heard the news the other night. I immediately went to listen to one of the shows that I got from you a while back. It helped to listen and I am so grateful to you for providing so much beauty in this world gone mad!
Gratitudinally,
-Scott
RIP John Prine. So much suffering.
This one hits very hard. Saw him in concert for the first time last year after half a lifetime of fandom. One of my very favorite songwriters. Funny, clearheaded, and humane. He will be hugely missed. Certainly by me.
