So with my background have been curious about JG’s “coma”. I’m not trying to be rude at all, but what was it? I have a form of diabetes so have wondered if was related or not. Used to have a job where tried to help people with diabetes too.

I’m not an expert on Jerry’s personal life but my understanding is this: Through the early 1980s his drug addiction got worse. He was hitting heroin pretty hard. He cleaned up briefly in late 1985-early 1986. But he was still very overweight and unhealthy. During the Dead’s big stadium tour in 1986 he relapsed into drug use. After being clean for awhile his body just couldn’t take the reintroduction of drugs (and presumably when he started using again he was using the larger doses his body had gotten used to when he was in full-on addict mode). This mixed with the general unhealthiness knocked him into a diabetic coma.
