The Lostbrook Tape Series – Volume 98

Some concert venues evoke memories of an entire era. When I think of summertime concerts in the 1970’s, Wollman Rink is such a place for me. I have vivid memories of waiting all day in the hot sun on lines that snaked their way along the walking paths of Central Park. Meeting like-minded people who wanted to sit close to the stage was part of the experience. I have no idea why I sat in the cheap seats this day since all the tickets were inexpensive to begin with. The orchestra must have been sold out, but it worked out for the best. The sound
was crisp and clear where I sat, Gabriel was magnificent, and the tape is one of my best. I’ll never forget the blood red sunset reflecting off the boulders outside the rink as the crowd chanted along with “Biko.” This was my last concert at Wollman Rink, and, sadly, the only one I ever recorded there. When the festival moved to Pier 84 the next year, I didn’t follow. For me, it was one more sign that an era had ended.

  1. Thank you kindly for this, The Schaefer/Dr Pepper Festivals in Central Park were memorable, I saw many a show there. This one was highly anticipated, i was not there, but those who attended were blown away, thanks for the reup! 🙂

  2. Thanks a lot for this Mat. For some reason, I have become semi-obsessed recently with mid-period Peter Gabriel like this tour. And, any shows from Central Park seem cool just by definition.

So thanks a lot for this!

  3. I was at this gig! It was brilliant! Funny thing is, I never liked Dr. Pepper. But as stated earlier, it was a blazing hot summer day, I was thirsty as heck, and that Dr. Pepper tasted like the most refreshing thing ever! Anyway, from those days to having just seen Peter on the current i/o tour, he is a once-in-a lifetime genius! Saw many shows on that Melt tour, the entrance to Intruder is still one of the most dramatic openings of any band I’ve ever seen!
