Very expensive album and unnecessary. The original double LP from 1978 was the max. I can get you a copy, but how can I do that? Do you have an email address where I can send it via Wetransfer?
Agreed. So many better options for a release. No idea why this was what they came up with, why it’s so insanely expensive, and why you can’t just buy two discs with all the unreleased tracks. Instead, you have to buy the vinyl (only) for about $50 for two discs (ouch) and then still have to go and pay to download the dozen other tracks that are new. I wouldn’t be so angry about this if they weren’t claiming to be winding down the Bootleg Series. Why not let someone (like me!) take it over and release it through subscriptions, like the Dead do?
People really do get angry at this release. I can see why as it is really expensive and a lot of what you are getting is what we already own. I do wish they had released some shows from this tour from later dates.
It does feel like a lot of artists are doing these big expensive boxed sets because they know the hard core fans are going to buy them, and its the same fans that buy everything. Like I wonder if they do the math and realize that if they had made this set cost half of what it does they’d basically get the same amount of sales, so why not jack it up and make more money since they aren’t actually going to lose a lot of sales.
Like the Dead have done some big, expensive limited edition sets and sold out.
I dunno, I’m just speculating. I don’t collect physical copies of music anymore. Which is weird since I love actual books and collect physical media when it comes to movies. I just don’t have the space for music.
The rumor I head about the bootleg series is that they were going to continue releasing live stuff, but the Bootleg Series (which has more or less concentrated on alt-cuts and the like) would be discontinued. There is so much live stuff in the vault it seems insane that they would never release it.
Yeah, the Dead archival releases sell much better than Bob’s. I talked to a couple of record stores and while they usually have the full boxsets of Bob releases, none of them ordered it this time because of the inflated cost. They are much more expensive this time than other archival releases even just from the past week. They tried to say it was because the Budokan set has essays and blah blah blah. Still no reason why they couldn’t just release a smaller set with all the unreleased tracks.
I heard the expense was due to the cost of vinyl and the like going way up over the last year or three. Whatever, this is definitely crazy high. That’s interesting about Bob not selling as well as the Dead, I would have assumed this stuff would sell well.
I completely agree about wishing they’d done alt releases of this with just the unreleased tracks, etc.
I read an interview back when the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa was just opening up about how much live stuff they had, but how they weren’t allowed to put most of it out for public consumption. If memory serves there were specific shows where Bob had actually commanded to never be made available or some such thing. I wish I could remember now where I read that article.
I mean I hope the guy lives forever, but also when he does go I really hope they are able to release shows at a steady pace like the Dead do.
Thank you, but I already have a copy. I didn’t work my question very well but what I was trying to ask was what everybody thought about it. How do you like the music?
The music is fine. Not better or worse than Budokan (the original release). No reason for it to be released, really, especially without all the soundchecked songs that no one’s heard before. It should’ve been all unreleased, maybe 3-4 discs, and include Am I Your Stepchild and all those other rehearsed tracks.
