This version is missing the last three songs and has been treated with excessive noise reduction. The same material, without digital processing, but heavily edited, can be found on the classic vinyl bootleg “Lakehurst”. A better and less edited transfer is found on “CSNY Archives No. 21 – Another 4 Way Street: The Complete Bill Halverson Tapes”. Unfortunately it is badly equalized, creating a ‘duophonic stereo’ effect, very shrill and heavily out of phase. The electric set also appears as the second disc of “CSNY Archives No. 20 – The Forum, Los Angeles, June 26, 1970”, aggressively de-hummed but otherwise identical to the preceding version.

   Remastering infoFor this release, I have adjusted the equalization of both channels independently to match released versions, fixed phase and azimuth issues, thousands of dropouts and a few clicks. There is quite a bit of tape noise, which I left untouched. The sound quality is now very good throughout – easily the next best sounding document of their 1970 tour after the official releases and the mono Fillmore reels.All sources had numerous cuts on the electric set. The transitions between the ambience sound are much less jarring when the songs are resorted so that “Ohio” follows “Helplessly Hoping”. This was bolstered by finding overlapping segments between these songs and that tuning from the intro to “Southern Man” had been tacked onto the end of “Ohio”. The fadeout between “Southern Man” and “As I Come Of Age” has been restored from the vinyl bootleg “Lakehurst”. All in all this should be much more continuous than any other release of this material. Some cuts do remain and are probably present on the source tape.

   QualityTracks 01-16 Very Good Stereo SBDTracks 17-19 Poor Stereo SBDThese recordings are all in narrow, but discrete stereo. Sometimes a guitar or an organ is panned, but most of the rest is centered. The last three tracks curiously seem to be from an alternate, lower quality source, with lower rolloff and highly compressed, but still soundboard stereo. At the beginning of the first song, the tracks pan around the stereo field, indicating that this compilation was merely a quick demonstrational “mock-up” mix and never a serious contender for release. Nonetheless, some of the performances eventually made it to the CD release of “4 Way Street”.

   Official releasesEdited alternate mixes of “Black Queen” and “The Loner / Cinnamon Girl / Down By The River” with overdubbed crowd noise have appeared on the CD reissue of “4 Way Street”. Another mix of “Black Queen”, more complete at the start but shorter at the end, again with additional crowd noise, is on the 1991 4-disc “Anthology”. The other Fillmore track on that compilation, “Man in the Mirror”, also from June 7, is not included on this tape.

2. Hi Mat,

   We were lucky enough to see CSN in Central Park NYC on 29 July 2008. It was very much the ‘Graham Nash Show’, with Stills looking quite poorly. But when we saw Stills with his group in Sheffied UK on Oct 18, he was really fired up.

   Don’t suppose you have either recording?
