OldNeumanntapr Notes; The December ’89 Inglewood Forum shows were the only Dead concerts that I recorded in Los Angeles. My ex wife and I stayed with my friend John Lech, in Malibu, and I did the Saturday and Sunday shows. This was the first time that I used my friend Gene’s relatively new grey-market Sony TCD-D10 DAT. I think there was only one other DAT recorder in the tapers section and everyone wanted a look at the D10.

At least for the Sunday show we were able to ride to the show with John and his girlfriend Edie because I made sure he had his tickets, and I didn’t have to go through a repeat of yesterday’s struggles.

I remember the little low swinging gate that you had to go through to get onto the floor and I was thinking about the Lakers playing basketball there and walking through that same gate time after time.

We were in the second row of the tapers section directly behind the board. I had to shut the DAT off during most of Space and part of Drums because we only had two of the NP-22H NiCad rechargeable batteries and I didn’t want to run out of power. Between the Forum shows and the ’89 NYE run at the Oakland Coliseum Gene bought one additional NiCad battery so we could record the complete show.

I patched my Sony WM-D6C out of the D10 for these shows but was fortunately able to copy the DAT masters years later once I switched to DAT.

This was the only time that I have seen Spencer Davis, and this was the only time that ‘I’m A Man’ was performed by the Dead.
