Van the Man’s music alive!!

Vol. 1 takes in January of 1999.
Van performed 2 times in England
and a 6 night run in the San Francisco area.
The 2 English shows were quite different from anything else that year and are well-representedhere. These 2 shows featured many songs that have not been recorded live since and are highly recommended Pee Wee Ellis was with him for all of the shows in January
He would perform 2 shows in Wales in February and not perform again in regular shows until March 15th

Vol. 3 goes right to May 28th in Hay-On-Wye-Wales
where he has consistently given good performances-in the
past and even in today’s troubled times.
Everything was right on this night-setlist-band-
venue-audience-and Van in or on great spirits-a pun???
There are no rarely performed songs here but all
are dynamite versions. This was the last time he would play Summertime In England that year.

Vol.5, 6 and 7 take in the last 4 months of the year
which IMO represented the best performances
of the year. Van was dialed in and his band was
to the point of near perfection. His setlists had improved
and still included See Me Through and In The Afternoon but he had
added a few And The Healing’s, It’s All In The Game and Man’s World’s
as workout songs. Sometimes He would perform 4 of them in
one concert. Can you imagine that happening today?? We were
treated to some very well recorded concerts during this time
and I can’t thank the tapers enough-as making a good recording
is not just about having superior equipment. No it requires lots of
restraint-to keep quiet and not move-good venues-good audiences
and Van dialed in-no mailing-and we have this rare situation
a few times in this period. Did Ye Get Healed was put back in the setlist during this period-which I was personally happy about!!

Vol. 5 features Ross-On-Wye and Torquay England
which were 2 great concerts. Van even talks some between
songs and asks for requests!!
Have I Told You Lately-a duet with Lavern Brown
In The Afternoon segues into Don’t You Make Me High-
the Joe Turner song. At first Van would do the 2 songs
separately. This was the prototype for what became
the In The Afternoon we associate with.
New Biography-after this one Van comments on his feelings
towards Wavelength-the magazine

and Brighton England.Features great Game and In The
Afternoon from Swindon and the best I’m Not Feeling It
from Portsmouth. Man’s World with Chris Farlowe ended
Bournemouth in December and Healing closed off Brighton
in November. In closing I want to stress that all of my Best
Of’s are not nescessarily the best recordings of the particular
songs-but are my favorite versions of the songs in the year
and are purely subjective!!!
