This one starts off huge. First the quality of this audience recording is great. It’s
amazing how good this sounds considering the technology available to the tapers 20
years ago. I feel very fortunate that every one of these great 1984 shows were recorded.
I would love to meet the people responsible and give them my thanks. This show has the
greatest “Highway 61 Revisited” of the entire tour in my opinion. Just fantastic! Taylor
is on fire and just feels exactly the right thing to play. Not that his playing on this is
mind-boggling but it just feels like the right thing that should be played at that moment.
Taylor more then any other guitarist is excellent at knowing the right thing to play and
what not to play. Contrast that with Santana who can’t seem to figure out that what he
plays is part of a song, not a chance for him to just throw out some fast riffs. Really, who
cares if it is NOT in the context of the song. Most of Santana’s playing on this tour fits in
that category unfortunately (“Heart of Mine” on this on stands out as a great song totally
raped of any feeling by this guys horrible and loud obnoxious tone and playing).
Anyway back to “Highway 61 Revisited.” Listen to Taylor just go off. In fact on this
one it sounds like the band is ending the song (at about 5:10 min) but continues on as
Taylor is peeling off fantastic riffs and grooving to the song. Strangely enough Taylor
backs off and becomes almost transparent for the majority of the rest of show.

Dylan as usual is great. Vocally he is continue to change phrasing, sometimes changing
to a harmony part and doing what he does best which is not to follow any preconceived
notion of how the song had been played before but to make it something new each night,
which he does every night on this tour. Listen to Taylor’s lack of slide on “Maggies
Farm” and how he plays very little on “I and I.” Right before “License to Kill” the crowd
is yelling for “Solid Rock” and Dylan replies “I don’t know that anymore” then laughs
then says, “I forgot the words to that.” He seems to be in good spirits this night. On all
of his acoustic stuff the natural reverb of the venue is great. “Shelter from the Storm” is a
nice surprise and one of only three times played this tour. Taylor emerges briefly for a
great solo on “Ballad of a Thin Man.” Then we come to the dreaded Santana portion
where on this night the conga players join in. Do congas fit in on “Blowing in the
Wind?” Well, neither does Santana’s horrible lead work so I guess maybe there is some
continuity in it all . . .NOT!

Right now is the 20th Anniversary of those shows and I thought it would be cool to
release each show to STG on the date of the actual show plus 20 years. So, here is the
thirteenth show; only 14 more!!! We’ll see if I can keep up with the rest of the tour. So
far so good!

This is the 11th show with Bob Dylan and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor.
This is another very good bordering on great show and in great quality. Parts of it are
fantastic. The crowd is very vocal on this one yelling out for songs such as (this one
amazes me since this song had just been written less than a year before and was never
released until years later) “Blind Willie McTell,” “Solid Rock,” and even the Rolling
Stones / Mick Taylor classic “Time Waits For No One” (at the end of track 3, disc 2).
Also someone yells out at the end of the first acoustic set “Where is the Band,” which is
quite a tribute to them as Dylan was putting on a great solo performance at the time.
Taylor plays a fantastic solo on Greg Suttons “Imagination.” The setlist is fairly typical.
“Man of Peace” is included this night (replaces “Simple Twist of Fate”) and is really one
of the better versions of it. “Why Do I Have To Choose” is interesting because Taylor
opts NOT to play slide on it (he plays the second solo on it this night). Santana as usual
ruins every song he plays on with his bad tone and solos that do not fit in with the music.
One interesting thing that happened was that “All Along the Watchtower” was played
twice this night. Once in it’s usual spot in the show and then as the last song. Also,
Santana’s conga players are on the last couple of songs. Right now is the 20th anniversaryof those shows and I thought it would be cool to release each show to STG on the date of
the actual show plus 20 years. So, here is the eleventh show; only 16 more!!! We’ll see
if I can keep up with the rest of the tour. No artwork, enjoy

After more than 20 years, opinion is still divided when it comes to Bob Dylan’s 23rd studio album, Empire Burlesque (1985). According to the wikipedia, “fans and critics continue to debate the album’s merits, especially when compared to Dylan’s classics of the 1960s, ’70s and 2000s.”
Kurt Loder, reviewing the album in Rolling Stone magazine, called the album “a blast of real rock & roll, funneled through a dense, roiling production – custom-chopped-and-channeled by remix wiz Arthur Baker – that affords Dylan more pure street-beat credibility than he has aspired to since… well, pick your favorite faraway year. Could there be actual hits hunkering here? Is Dylan “back”? Again? One is tempted to trumpet some such tidings.

“Because of the basic nature of its material, however elliptically presented, Empire Burlesque is bound to confound and exasperate many listeners. I continue to miss the emotional specificity of past Dylan masterworks, like “Tangled Up in Blue,” and grow weary of his woozier generalities (”Emotionally Yours” could be about a lover, or it could be about Jesus; it’s so lacking in detail, I can’t imagine how anyone could care). But I am heartened when he cranks up and rocks out, as he does here. Dylan may never resolve the tension between spiritual conviction and rock & roll kicks, but I like to think he’s straying in the right direction.”
In 1992, Sick Cat released Clean Cuts, a collection of Empire Burlesque outtakes. As bobsboots.com pointed out: “The biggest problem with this release is in trying to put too many tracks on it! The technology of the day allowed 70 to 72 minutes recording time. This disc is 72:02. However, to achieve that time constraint of the CD, the songs were mastered about 10 per cent too fast.”

Welcome to a lovely and oft-overlooked corner of Bob Dylan’s recording career – the sessions
that led to 1981’s Shot of Love. Shot of Love is a remarkably good record, whatever else you’ve
heard, and was Dylan’s last to sound like a bunch of people playing in the same room until Love
& Theft in 2001. There was no sleek shine to this production, and consequently it breathed with
the passion found in much of the man’s best work. Unfortunately, many of the finest recordings
from these sessions were not released on that album. In particular, “Yonder Comes Sin” and
“Caribbean Wind” are absolutely essential, and “Heart of Mine” was recorded in a much better
rendition than the one that appears on the official release.
Outside of these classics, more minor gems were recorded. No collection of Dylan outtakes
would be complete without these covers of “Mystery Train” and “Let It Be Me.” The
fragmentary songs, including “Hallelujah” (not the Leonard Cohen song) and “Borrowed Time”
make one wonder what could have been; “Is It Worth It” and “Ah Ah Ah Ah (High Away)” point
to the reggae-influenced road ahead to Infidels, and contribute to the overall Caribbean sound of
this era.
The other studio cuts are intriguing as well. “Let’s Keep It Between Us” is a fairly recently
unearthed prototype for a song that would become transcendent on the road in Fall, 1980; you
can find a live recording of the song on Rise Again: Live, Fall 1980. “Caribbean Wind” is one of
Bob Dylan’s greatest compositions, and this studio performance remains the only one not

officially released (among the ones that have circulated). Until 2017, only the overproduced
rendition on Biograph was available to paying customers; this was happily rectified with Trouble
No More, where a soft piano rehearsal and the mind-blowing live performance from 1980 were
finally officially released. This version of the song is somewhere between the rehearsal and live
version, as it features the “rattlesnake” lyrics of the rehearsal that appears on Trouble No More
but includes a more propulsive rhythm section.
The rough mixes of “Dead Man, Dead Man,” “Watered-Down Love,” and “In The Summertime”
are all interesting, but “Watered-Down Love” stands above the others, retaining an extra verse
not present on the official release but conspicuous in live performances from 1981. It’s likely
that, like the longer version of “Dead Man, Dead Man” that appears on 2017’s Trouble No More,
this extra verse was cut for time constraints on the 1981 Shot of Love LP. “In The Summertime,”
too, stands out for the inclusion of a mournful harmonica that extends the song by a full minute
beyond its officially released version. “Dead Man, Dead Man” is reasonably similar to the
version that appeared on the final album, but drum and guitar overdubs would eventually be
overlaid upon this raw in-studio rendition.
A handful of songs have been cut from this updated publication of an earlier Thousand Highways
compilation. Of these, “The Groom’s Still Waiting At The Altar” was abandoned for its similarity
to the officially released studio performance; the only difference was an extended conclusion in
which the band eventually stops playing. Live recordings have also been omitted to improve the
sense of cohesion. An extended two-disc collection representing the 1981 tours will cover this
material.

From an old cassette (received in trade 1992-11-15, no lineage info). The quality here is not too good (#WhereAreTheMasters?), especially since this was clearly taken from a radio broadcast (musical bits edited out on my tape); there’s a little hiss, but it also sounds like not such a great recording to begin with, possibly, or maybe it was just a bad radio signal. Anyway, it IS fairly audible at least (Bob moreso than Julia), and it’s a nice little interview. Apparently it doesn’t get around that much, so I’m torrenting it. WEIRD NOTE: My tape is somewhat “circular” in that it seems to end on the same verbal exchange it begins with. I don’t know if this was an arty broadcast choice or what, but that’s the way my tape is.
