Oldneumanntapr Notes:
It really was an outstanding show. Wow! I got there at 5:30 and felt really conspicuous standing there with my taping sweatshirt (I only wear it for recording because it’s long, thin, and dark-colored) covering my pack when it was 75+ degrees. Fortunately, no one noticed. There was a VIP line and a Gen Admin line. I was the third person in line in the Gen Admin line. The VIP thing was kind of a crock. You had to pay $12 or $15 dollars more for your ticket for the privilege. They let those people in about five minutes before they let the rest of us in. It was a ‘meet and greet’, but with only 5 minutes it couldn’t have been much. The chairs were still Gen Admin.
I had no trouble getting the third row, DEAD center. I was directly to the right of the front center
ceiling post.
What a difference a crowd makes! Wow! They were so polite and quiet. It was dead silent during the show. The only noise from the crowd was polite applause between songs. It was SO quiet that you could actually hear the hand dryers going off in the bathroom during the performance! I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before, because the bands and the crowds are always so loud. Even Ottmar noticed it. He cocked his head and smiled. The PA wasn’t really that loud. It was really clean and sounded nice and full without being overpowering. They obviously did NOT take a page from the ‘Lindsay Buckingham acoustic playbook’!!!
They played two sets. The first set was 45 minutes. The bass player, Jon Gagan, played a standup bass. Ottmar played an acoustic guitar made by a guitar maker from Nipomo! (He mentioned it between songs.) Chris, the drummer, played a wooden box for the first set that Ottmar said was a Peruvian or Venezuelan instrument. I can’t remember the name, but translated it means ‘box’.
The second set was about 50 – 55 minutes. The bass player played two different electric bass guitars.
Ottmar alternated between the acoustic Flamenco guitar and an electric guitar. (I liked the acoustic better.) The drummer played a regular trap drum set with two other small boxes, one on either side. They all used in-ear monitors. I noticed that there was no monitor cabinets on stage. They each had a little electronic box mounted on a mic stand. I didn’t know if they were for customizing the monitor mix on stage, or the sound of the instruments.
The drummer was the only one who had any hair!!! 😉
