OldNeumanntapr Notes;
After hearing ‘Snake Farm’ played again and again on K-Pig FM I knew that I had to see (and record) Ray Wylie Hubbard. Ray is an awesome story teller who has a very funny, self-deprecating humor. I really wish more tapers were recording him. I love the acoustics of the Lobero Theatre, and my recordings always sound good in there, in part because of the polite quiet crowd. This was the very last show that I was able to transfer with my Tascam DA-30 because the transport broke down directly after. This was, I believe, the last ‘Sings Like Hell’ series show that I was able to see and record at the Lobero. Ray told some funny stories at this show, such as playing solo acoustic in a shrimp restaurant and finally hearing what sounded like applause from a single patron, but it turned out to be a guy slapping the bottom of a ketchup bottle. He also told a story about describing his drive and determination as a musician to a younger concert attendee; “When your folks tell you to go to college so you will have sometime to fall back on in case your music doesn’t pan out, don’t do that! Then you too will have that drive.” Too funny! I remember that my friend Rick came with me to the show that night and neither of us had seen Ray before and we listened to a soundboard in my truck of Ray Wylie Hubbard from Texas that was recorded a few years previously. As we got near the theatre we saw a Jeep Cherokee with Texas plates and knew we were in the right place! I met Ray in the meet and greet room behind the theater after the show and told him that my friend Roger from Oklahoma encouraged me to go see him play.
