As I mentioned in this week’s Pick of the Week I’m a big fan of David Fincher’s Se7en. What’s astonishing is that this was just his second feature film. He’d made numerous music videos before entering the world of movies, so he knew his way around a set and behind a camera. But his first feature film, Alien3, was a disaster. The studio constantly interfered, the box office was disappointing and critics mostly hated it (there has since been a “Director’s Cut” of sorts and it’s actually pretty good).
My point is that it is something of a small miracle he was able to make another film at all, that he made something so audacious, so freaking good as Se7en is a testament to Fincher’s confidence and vision so early in his career.
They just released a nice 4k UHD version of the film and it looks amazing. You can read my full review here.

This is a truly fabulous and interesting collection of early Tom Waitsí radio shows that includes music and interviews during a period of about a year and half; around the time of his first couple of album releases. Fascinating because you can actually hear audibly the metamorphosis of Tom from a struggling musician into a star. His singing style change is remarkable and his growing confidence is obvious. The earliest stuff doesnít sound at all like the Tom we know and love. The change in his voice is amazing (smoking and drinking does take its toll, lol). Tomís interviews are very interesting as he tells the background stories of the songs, kind of a pre-Storytellers thing. Donít miss this one if you donít have it. Enjoy.
I don’t talk about books as much as I do movies simply because I watch a lot more movies than I read books. I love reading. I love books. But I’d be lying if I said I read all the time. I tend to get distracted by movies and TV shows, social media and…well, this blog.
I try to set time aside each night to do a little reading. Sometimes that works. Sometimes I play silly games until way too late at night and just go to bed.
But Goodreads does a fun little end-of-the-year summary so I thought I’d talk about books for a minute.
I read 17 books in 2024 which seems abysmally small. Especially since half of them were comic books. No shade on comics, I love them, but they do tend to be a little shorter than your typical novel.
Outside of comics I mostly read detective stories which is no surprise and a wonderful book of TV essays by Emily Nussbaum. That reminds me how much I love a good cultural essay and that I should find more of them online.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 33: Progress and the Doom Machine
This one goes out in memory of David Plentus, the founder of DylanCover.com, who passed away last month. I didn’t know him, but his site is an invaluable resource and it always gave me a sense of accomplishment when one of my compilations appeared on his NSD page. I hope someone will be continuing the site as a tribute to his dedication.
A couple of notes on this volume’s selection: I know some don’t consider “Ballad of Easy Rider” and “Wagon Wheel” true Dylan songs, but they’re both damn good, and after 33 volumes I decided to take the liberty; if you’re a purist, don’t download those tracks. And I also know John Mayer is widely reviled, but I think he does a nice job with “Don’t Think Twice”; as when I included Guns ‘N Roses, I’ve come down on the side of the music and tried to ignore personalities.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 34: So Long, Honey Babe
Why do we admire Suze Rotolo? I think it’s because she kept her secrets, even at the risk of letting herself be defined (publicly, at least) by a handful of songs written by an articulate but temporarily bitter ex-boyfriend. When she did finally break her silence, it was with a discretion and dignity rare in our modern celebrity culture. So this volume is dedicated to Suze (and does not contain a version of “Ballad in Plain D”).

Christmas time is weird. I mean it is lovely, and wonderful, but it is also like a black hole time warp. We took off for a week around Christmas to visit my in-laws. We came back the Monday before New Year. So I worked for one day and then had a day off. Then I worked Thursday and Friday but things were kind of slow, so there wasn’t actually much to do. Today it was so cold that none of my subcontractors came out to work so yet again a slow day.
It is hard to remember to do anything on a day like this. I almost forgot to write this article. Luckily we are still in the post-Christmas doldrums so there isn’t much coming out.
I’m on record as a pretty big David Fincher fan and Seven is one of my favorite films from him. I love a good serial killer movie and this is one of the very best. I actually just got my copy of this new 4K release of the film and I’ll be writing a review for Cinema Sentries soon so I won’t say any more.
Also out this week that looks interesting:
Yojimbo/Sanjuro 4K UHD: I’m very much on record as being an Akira Kurosawa fan. These two films star Toshiro Mifune as a masterless samurai who outwits pretty much everyone aren’t the best films from the famed director but they might be the most fun to watch.
Drag Me To Hell: Sam Raimi got his start making horror films, then he spent a decade making dramas, westerns, and three Spider-Man films. Drag Me to Hell was his return to horror. It is pretty good too. They’ve made a sequel so naturally it is now getting a 4K UHD release.
Saturday Night: I haven’t watched Saturday Night Live in decades. I periodically toss on clips from a recent show via YouTube and I never find it funny. But back in the day, I loved it. This film about the opening night of the very first show has gotten mixed reviews, but I’m somewhat intrigued.

JS starts to get a bit tired of the whole effort starting in here somewhere and I can’t say I blame him at all. And I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I do start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).
On the other hand department – another struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me, who don’t have them all. Are they still active here? Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women, maybe?

The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. One wonders how they decided on the misleading description.

It’s been a long time, but after finally getting my hands on the Esquires’ (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch) version of “Idiot Wind,” I figured it was time for a comeback. There are three others from that same PEN tribute to Dylan, plus lots of other new names and four songs not previously in the series. Plus the Flatt and Scruggs version of “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind,” as seen on The Beverly Hillbillies (where it was dedicated to Granny).

Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk music groups of the 1960s. Unlike most folk musicians of the early 1960s who were a part of the burgeoning music scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Travers grew up there. A contralto, Travers released five solo albums in addition to her work with Peter, Paul and Mary. (picture w/ bob?) May she rest peacefully.

JS starts to get a bit ‘burned’ starting in here somewhere. See below. I can’t blame him at all and I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I can start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think). And what do I think about backups now?

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion
Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!
This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.
As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003
