details:
——–

tracks 1,2,4,5:
– from mysterious tape labelled “AMLOR Outtakes” (order on tape: 4-5-2-1)
– appears lossy (probably mp3 sourced)
– probably copied from tape DG brought to BBC Radio One on 28Jul92
– MOB remastering: speed correction (98.5%) + deglitching
+ correction of a “hole” at the end of Signs Of Life

tracks 3:
– from 28Jul92 BBC Radio One stereo FM broadcast (track 2 slightly longer but mono)
– taken from “A Tree Full Of Secrets”
– MOB remastering: speed correction (105%) + EQ

tracks 6,7,8,9:
– from mysterious tape labelled “DB Outtakes” (same order as the tape)
– tracks maybe lossy, certainly heavily processed (NR) and muffled
– MOB remastering: manual removal of digital clicks (lot of clipping)
+ EQ in order to improve sound clarity

track 10:
– from mysterious tape labelled “EMI/Sony pre-mix ’93”
– taken from “Bear In Tree” RoIO

MOB Remaster
Revision A

Details:

This is a revised version from the one I shared previously (in 2008 on JAC and
in May 2013 on Yeeshkul!). Tracks are either upgrades compared to previous
versions, or new tracks (tracks 2, 11, 13, 14 and 15).

Tracks 1, 3, 5 and 6 come from a tape that David Gilmour brought to BBC Radio
One studios on 28Jul92, for his interview by Nick Horne (promoting the “Shine
On” box set). They are from a pre-FM source and sound slightly better than the
versions on the previous release, but are still mono. For that reason, the
current compilation also includes the versions of “Like A Rolling Stone”
(track 2) and “Learning To Fly” (track 4) taken from the stereo FM broadcast
(“The Dogs Of War” and “Signs Of Life” were on the tape but were not broadcast
during the BBC show).

The most significant upgrades are the 4 untitled demos from 1993 (tracks 7 to
10), for which I received unprocessed versions some months ago. The versions
circulating until now had severe NR and were very muffled. The new versions
offered here have some hiss, but sound natural and clear. The 1st demo was
apparently assembled from two jams, and the first part was probably accelerated
in order to have the same pitch as the second part. This demo was later
developed and properly recorded by the band (the resulting studio outtake can
be heard on track 11). The 4th demo is also an assemblage, from four separate
jams (the third one containing the ascending chord sequence that appeared later
on “What Do You Want From Me”).

The outtake of “Wearing The Inside Out” (track 12) is from the same source as
previously (“Bear In Tree” RoIO), with muffled sound as if the tape was played
back with Dolby ON while the recording was not using Dolby. It was carefully
remastered in order to bring some clarity and now sounds slightly better than
the previous version.

The last 3 tracks are completely new, and form together an 11 minute
instrumental suite. These outtakes probably come from an early version of “The
Division Bell” album, and reveal that the first intention of the Floyd was to
make a long instrumental piece where “Cluster One” segues into “Marooned”, and
then into a third part with percussions. This third part was abandoned for the
final version of the album, but its harmonies were re-used in the bridge of
“High Hopes”. Please note that this instrumental suite was given to me with
plenty of digi-noises, crackles and clicks, and was almost unlistenable in its
rough form. I used de-clicking and de-crackling methods in order to make it
listenable – and even enjoyable – but you can still hear some kind of “surface”
noise or saturation during the loud parts. There is still hope to get a better
(cleaner) version in the future. In the meantime, this is the best as it could
sound.

This new year will see the 20th anniversary of “The Division Bell” album, so it
seems to be a perfect time to share these upgraded and new rarities.

Pink Floyd – Antiques & Curios

Pink Floyd
“Antiques and Curios”
rare live performances and other strangeness
produced by Jim Shoes and the Barkin’ Dogs

This is a disc of unusual, unique or otherwise rare live performances. It takes quite a lot of trading to hear all these odd tracks, so I thought a compilation might be in order. This is by no means a collection of the “definitive” versions of these performances, although many of them are appearing here in improved versions from what normally circulates. It’s a mixed bag, in any case, but sound quality was not the deciding factor, as you will see…
This is an excellent disc for those who are not the ‘hard core’ collectors, although some of this will interest you types as well.

1) Green is the Colour [3:20]

2) Careful With That Pipe Wrench, Larry [3:19]
from BBC Night Ride, May, 12, 1969
Ok, now what the hell is this doing on a “rareties” disc? Well, these tracks are often missing and/or replaced with the 1970 versions on many a RoIO, even some of the ‘definitive’ BBC collections These tracks are almost as rare as the 1970 ‘Fat Old Sun’ broadcast found on Harvested’s ‘Mooed Music’. These have the bird sounds, and ‘careful’ isn’t quite a normal version (ergo, my not-so-normal title). I would be interested to know if anyone has these tracks in pristine quality, as these are not ideal. [VG]

3) Main Theme from ‘More’ [10:25]
Town Hall, Birmingham, Feb. 11, 1970
It’s a cryin’ shame this wasn’t played “more” often. some digital tinkering happened here to squeeze what could be squeezed out of this. I think it sounds better than the ususal versions, but it’s still not great. The performance, however, is incredible. This infact may be nick mason’s finest moment. flamboyant, yet always tasteful. 4) Moonhead [7:39]

5) The Pict Rant [3:50]
Ernst-Merke Halle, Hamburg, Nov. 14, 1970
A rare complete performance of Moonhead (aka ‘Corrosion’), followed by one of Roger’s best and most, um, vigorous, ‘Pict Rants’. This comes from a clone of the master tape, and sounds better than the ‘Grooving With a Pict’ RoIO of this show. [EX-]

6) Home Again [1:45]

7) Mortality [3:30]
The Dome, Brighton, Jan. 20, 1972
The only instrumental performance of ‘Home Again’ (aka ‘Breathe reprise’) along with the ‘preacher tape’ organ noodling. Dave shows off with the voxbox guitar thing. I like this version quite a bit. Mortality ends about a minute earlier than on the source tape, because a loud and noise kicks in, as their PA system started to fail. An editorial decision was made to remove this unpleasantness from this release. It’s just a bit more of the same organ fluff and sound effects, so it’s not like there is anything ‘important’ compromised. [EX]

8) Have a Cigar [5:07]
Knebworth Festival, UK, July 5, 1975
The last show of the 1975 tour, and the only live version with Roy Harper. After hearing this, you’ll be grateful there’s only one. Sound quality is not so hot, and the performance, is, well, tired. I’m sorry this turkey is in here, but hey. [VG-]

9) Pigs on the Wing pt.2 [3:39]
Olympic Stadium, Montreal, July 6, 1977
Roger shares some love with the audience. Later in the show he had more to share. This comes from a better source than ‘Azimuth Coordinator’, and one might be inclined to speculate that this is but a taste of things to come. Indeed. Nice solo from Snowy White. [EX+]

10) The Last Few Bricks pt.2 [8:16]
LA Arena, Los Angeles, Feb. 7, 1980
I could write a book on this ‘song’, but i won’t. This is the last piece of new music from the 4-man lineup, the extra jam played on the first night of the Wall tour. It’s a variation on an instrumental version of breathe (hmm, sound familiar?), was probably ‘written’ by dave gilmour, as he was the ‘music director’ for the shows, and i’ll bet it was rehearsed once or twice. Often assumed to be a one-time improv jam to cover a lag in the stage show, it was infact played TWICE… [EX]

11) The Last Few Bricks pt.2 [3:16]
LA Arena, Los Angeles, Feb. 8, 1980
…and this is the other performance. It’s a different arrangement, and about half as long as the night before. A true gem; performance-wise, I like this one better. but the sound quality is not as nice as the other. I didn’t do the vinyl ‘remastering’ on this one, and there is too much noise reduction for my taste. [VG]

12) Celestial Voices [9:13]
Royal Albert Hall, June 26, 1969
The only live performance of this with a choir and orchestra. 9 minutes long, this whopper originates from a better source than what usually circulates of this show. [VG]

13) Brain Damage/Lunar Eclipse (RoIO Remix 2000) [5:30]
Studio and Guild Hall, Portsmouth Jan 21, 1972
How’s THAT for a tacky title? This is a combination of three oddities: The quadraphonic mixdown of Brain Damage from “Works”, the guitar solos shown in the studio excepts of the Live at Pompeii movie, and the first performance of “Eclipse” (the song) at Portsmouth. Except, that it ain’t quite a song yet, as you will hear. My edits are basically passable, but this is in NO WAY to be considered a rare studio outtake. I (ME) made this, for your amusement only.

Hello and welcome to JEMS’ Foxes In The Boxes, the third and, sad to say, final volume in a series featuring unreleased studio sessions from the Rolling Stones, circa 1979-85. Based on our research, along with the expertise of Stones sessionologist N, who helped us sort through these tapes, we believe the Foxes In The Boxes series offers a small trove of previously uncirculated material, along with upgrades and a few familiar outtake favorites from new source tapes. All of the outtakes, alternate mixes and takes found on Volume Three have never been released.

The series is titled Foxes In The Boxes in homage to its source: boxes of in-house cassette tapes obtained by JEMS from someone “on the inside” of a major record label in the ’70s and ’80s. It is also a rhyming nod to the bootleg Static In the Attic (Midnight Beat), which mined the same sessions for kindred material and to which we believe Foxes makes a worthy companion.

Some tracks in the series have been previously rumored to exist, some are wholly new finds, while others improve upon previously circulating versions. There are a few frustrating fragments, too, but what’s presented here is exactly what was on the tapes, which were seemingly meant to capture and present in-progress status of Stones sessions and to preserve ideas for future consideration. With that said, let’s go track by track through Volume Three:

Indian Girl: Shorter than any previously known version in circulation. The spoken line, “Mr. Gringo, my father he ain’t no Che Guevara” is missing and the take also features fewer horn overdubs.

Emotional Rescue: Again, shorter take than any previously known version. Distinctive and somewhat strange mix with much more guitar, keyboards and backing vocals. Also features an echoey percussion effect at the start not heard on any other mix.

No Use In Crying: Yet another new, shorter version compared to whatís in circulation. This is an edit of an early mix (before the piano overdub was added), which moves the line ìcome on sugarî earlier in the song because some of the falsetto vocals have been cut.

I Think Iím Going Mad: Listed on the tape under the slightly different title ìThink I’m Going Mad.î Yet another edit of an early version, which already has the saxophone in the intro but is still lacking the piano overdub. Several small changes in the first verse before the line, “All the highs and lows don’t mean a thing to me, don’t give a damn.î

Where The Boys Go: Different lead vocal from Mick on a take that has the male background vocals already in place, but not the girls’ backing chorus at the end. The guitar solo is also unedited unlike the album.

Summer Romance: Another alternate lead vocal on an uncirculated take that lacks the third guitar which normally begins in at 0:06.

Undercover Of The Night: A different, shorter mix, especially the opening of the song, which is totally unique to other mixes in circulation.

We Had It All: Cover of the Troy Seals and Donny Fritts song, first released by Waylon Jennings in 1973. Different lead vocal from the released version, but seemingly the same take as previously bootlegged versions of the song.

She Was Hot: Keyboard-heavy long mix, very similar to the version first leaked on WYSP FM Philadelphia in 1983 and later uploaded to the It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll Stones internet forum some time ago, but lacking the double-tracked vocals found on those, which presumably makes it an earlier mix of the alternate take.

Bonus Track

Keep It Cool: The remarkable 20+ minute version posted to IORR by Bkeys in response to the release of the shorter version of Foxes Vol. One. His original was slightly off speed; here it is pitched-adjusted by Goody and remastered by JEMS to make it just a little bit better.

JEMS offers its thanks to N, who helped us sort through the tapes and provided invaluable insight in ascertaining what we had. The song-by-song notes above are culled from N’s essential contributions. Pitch adjustments come courtesy of Goody, who lent us his keen ear and his unwavering commitment to A440. Thank you, Goody. SkipKid68 also chimed in with valuable feedback, so thanks to him, too. The much-appreciated official cover art is courtesy of ethiessen1. A shout out to Bkeys for releasing ìKeep It Coolî from his tapes. We hope there are more to come. And last but not least, kudos to mjk5510, who came on board at the start and helped finish the project to get it into your hands.

We hope Foxes In The Boxes was as much fun for you to listen to as it was for us to compile.
