JS starts to get a bit ‘burned’ starting in here somewhere. See below. I can’t blame him at all and I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I can start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think). And what do I think about backups now?

On the other hand department. The next struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me who don’t have them all. Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women?

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion

Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!

This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

17 The Lonesome Death of Ruth Corrie – Billy Bragg (Mar 26, 2006, The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA)

(I put this bit in. don’t mean to pique controversy. as above) r5

The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003

An Israeli bulldozer killed poor Rachel Corrie,
As she stood in its path in the township of Raffa..

But Rachel Corrie believed in non-violent resistance
Put herself in harm’s way as a shield of the people
And paid with her life in a manner most brutal

But you who philosophise disgrace and criticise all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain’t the time for your tears.

For anyone who found NSD 22 a little slow, this one should make up for it. There are some notes on performers at the bottom. As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, PM me.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Import Label: Righteous ASIN: B0039L1J6Q VARIOUS ARTISTS (Artist)
The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. I don’t wonder much how they decided on the misleading description.

I included some art in these last ones. It may/may not have any relationship to our subject. As always if you don’t want them, just set your client to opt out.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, VOl. 37: Crying Like a Fire in the Sun

How time flies. I had this one ready to go for the tenth anniversary of the Love + Theft release (September 11) when my cable modem went kaput. By the time Comcast came out and fixed it, I had missed the date and it’s been sitting on my hard drive ever since. So, at last, here it is. Also, the tracks for Vol. 38 are already ready, so that should be along soon.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Lastly, if you are interested in MP3 covers (Dylan and others), check out my blog at http://smallfiguresinavastexpanse.blogspot.com/. I’m going to try to make it a daily thing for the foreseeable future. Say hi in the comments section so I know you came by.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 38: Time To Carve Another Notch

They say downloading is killing recorded music, and I’m starting to believe them: from a peak of about 1500 downloads on a new volume of NSD, we’re now down to around 300. I guess everyone else is getting them off Pirate Bay (or Music Ruined My Life). And now with the competition from Amnesty International’s four CD Dylan cover set, I really expect to take a hit. But there is some spectacular music here, and that’s the important thing.

Happy Thanksgiving–Jeff.
