Jackson Browne – Osaka, Japan (03/24/77)

JACKSON BROWNE with band featuring David Lindley
First Time in Osaka
Osaka Festival Hall
Osaka, Japan
March 24, 1977

Jackson gave an amazing show for his first appearance in Osaka. The setlist is outstanding overall and contains unique one-of-a-kind performances of The Only Child and Cocaine in addition to arrangements which feature his band and, especially, David Lindley.

This is a wonderful audience recording with excellent sound for 1977. The recording remains as I received it in a trade except that at the beginning of Disc 2 I separated Jackson’s comments to the audience from The Only Child into a distinct track.

The band:

Jackson Browne–vocals, guitar, piano
David Lindley–guitars, violin, vocals
Mark Jordan–keyboards
John Mouseri–drums
Bryan Garafalo–bass
David Morgan–guitar
David Landau–guitar

Lineage: cdr acquired in trade > EAC > HD > TLH > FLAC (level 8) > you

  7. For a Dancer
  8. Song for Adam
  9. Doctor My Eyes >

Disc 2 (61:36):

  2. The Only Child
  3. Walking Slow
  4. The Road and the Sky
  5. Before the Deluge
  6. The Pretender
  7. Do You Wanna Dance >

There seems to be a lot of questions and mis-information around Jackson’s Japanese leg of 1977 ‘The Pretender Tour’.
Piecing it all together it appears Jackson played Japan six times during the tour and the dating below I believe is the most accurate.

03/16/77 Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Japan
03/18/77 Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Japan
03/20/77 Shinjyuku Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan
03/23/77 Kanagawa Preformance Hall, Yokohama, Japan
03/24/77 Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan
04/09/77 Kokusai Boeki Center, Tokyo, Japan “Rolling Coconut Revue”

Most of these dates do not appear to be in general circulation and they are not the best of quality.

Offered here is the second night in Tokyo, pitch adjusted and mastered. Quality is listenable but I’d consider it average at best. However, I wanted to get it out since this leg of the tour seems to be vastly under represented. This is the best quality of the Japanese shows I possess. I’ve done a ton of work mastering it to get it to what I’d consider a presentable package.

The show is an interesting listen, before “For A Dancer” he asks that the “cat calls must end” and about two minutes into “For A Dancer” he stops the song and spends about two minutes scolding an American audience member for being drunk, singing at the top of his lungs and disrupting the show, commenting if “you were in my audience at home they would have kicked your ass ten minutes ago”.

“Redneck Friend” during this portion of the tour generally appeared as part of an encore medley between “Do You Wanna Dance” and “Sweet Little Sixteen”, for this show “Redneck Friend” is a stand alone here to open the encores.

05 Stairway To Heaven (end cut)
06 Please Please Me
07 From Me To You

11 Going to California
12 We Shall Overcome
13 Tangerine
14 Down By The Riverside
15 The Grand Ole Opry
16 What Is And What Should Never Be
17 Moby Dick

This is another stellar performance from September 1971, and some version of this show is a must have for everyone who is a fan of the band. The audience recordings capture more of the show, but the soundboard allows us to better appreciate the interplay between JPJ and Bonzo, and how their playing forms the granite foundation from which Jimmy launches his forays into the stratosphere.

SQ: 8-8.5/10, vg+ aud IMHO
This appears to be a bit more than
50% of the concert.

This will be VERY short & sweet. This was requested by
1bgsky ; here you go, buddy ! This is by no means the
finest dub of this rare boot. I got this either in trade
or bought it within the last 15 years. The vinyl that this
was copied from has several pops and crackles in it ;
otherwise it sounds pretty good. I did NOTHING to attempt
to improve the SQ. If anybody wishes to try to remaster
this recording and up it here, go right ahead. I just hope
that you know what you’re doing. If anyone has a virgin
copy of this show, please do a first gen dub right off the
vinyl and up it on Dime. I’ll be looking for it !!! That’s
really all that I have so let’s get this show on the yellow
brick road to spiritual enlightenment…..

Finally, please don’t buy, sell or convert this show to mp3 or any other
lossy format. Please seed this as long as you can. Please trade this freely
as it probably is fairly uncirculated. This show will be a welcome addition
to any Queen fan’s collection. I will post a sample to help some of you decide
whether or not to get it. As rare as this seems to be though, you’d be a fool
to pass this up until a better copy appears. So, as Mr. Natural is so fond of
saying, have fun, don’t freak out and enjoy the concert !

BobTalk
Thank you. That was a recent hit of mine. Sold about three records ha-ha-ha. Here’s one, ha-ha, here’s one a little older. (after That Lucky Old Sun)

All right, I wanna take a little break here. I wanna introduce you to one of America’s finest rock ‘n’ roll bands, certainly one of my favorites, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (after Masters Of War)

Thank you. All right, here’s a song about recognition. Or lack of recognition. Tennessee Williams, it was he who said “I don’t ask for your pity, just your understanding. Not even that, but just your recognition of me in you. At times the enemy in us all.” Anyway, Tennessee Williams, he got a pretty drastic life too. He kind of died all by himself in a New York City Hotel room. Without a friend in the world. Another man died like that, except Tennessee Williams did have some success. This man didn’t have too much success, but he started a lot of people off. People who came, picked up on what he did and took it someplace else and made a lot of money and became very successful. And he died in a lonely grave. (before Lenny Bruce)

Thank you. All right, that was for Hugh McGhee wherever you are. This is a song I wrote a while back in response to people who ask me questions all the time. You just get tired of that every once in a while. You just don’t want to answer no more questions. I figure a person’s life speaks for itself, right? So, every once in a while you got to do this kind of thing, you got to put somebody in their place. Where I come from, there’s a lot of people who aren’t exactly in their place they should be, so every once in a while somebody has got to come and put them in their place. I don’t know whether it’s like that over here or not. I hope it’s not. But this is a song …. It’s not a bad thing to be put in your place, I didn’t say that. It’s actually a good thing. It’s been done to me every once in a while and I’ve always appreciated it. So this is my response to something that happened over in England. I think it was about ’63, ’64. Anyway the song still holds up. Seems to be people around still like that. So I still sing it. It’s called Ballad Of A Thin Man.

Thank you. Domo, domo, domo, I love that word, ha-ha . All right then once again now give them a warm hand. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (after Ballad Of A Thin Man)

Thank you. Ha-ha. Everybody must get stoned. Of course that can be taken two ways. This here next song, this can be taken only one way. I’ll play it for you if I can get my guitar into tune. Oh! it just came on! (before Seeing The Real You At Last)

Thank you. I wanna thank Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for backing me up tonight. On the keyboards, give him a warm hand, Benmont Tench. On the drums, Stan Lynch. On the bass guitar, Howie Epstein. On lead guitar, Michael Campbell. I especially want to thank Mr. Tom Petty himself. And of course I never go anywhere without my singing partners over there. They go by all kinds of names. But they go everywhere with me. And they hold me up in more ways than one. I wanna thank them too. Thank you girls. (before Like A Rolling Stone)

Thank you. We’re gonna play this song here as the last song of the night. This is about my hero. Everybody’s got a hero. This song’s about my hero. (before In The Garden)

Thank you. We’re gonna play this song here. This was a popular song when we were was growing up. Always meant a great deal. So, we don’t know exactly all the words but maybe you do. If you know them, you sing them. (before Sukiyaki)
