I really should like Gram Parsons more than I do.  He encompasses so much of what I love about music.  He virtually created alternative country, or country rock. He sang with Emmylou Harris.  He made the Byrds tolerable awesome. He was in a band called the Flying Burrito Brothers and if that ain’t a great name, I don’t know what is. He had one of the most spectacular/strange burials of all time.

All of these things are excellent and should be praised (well maybe not the weird death, but that’s just legendary.) I should love Gram Parsons. Yet every time I listen to him there seems to be something missing. I can’t put my finger on it exactly. I like his voice, I like his songs, but something doesn’t gel. Maybe it is some faulty wiring in my old noggin.

This concert though, I can’t complain about. It is Gram (and sometimes Emmylou) singing and playing and having a grand time. The sound, well let’s just say you can tell the recording is older than I am, but it still sounds good. If you like Gram, and you really should, then this is an excellent chance to see what he sounded like live.

  1. This is actually from Max’s Kansas City, NYC. A little bit better recording than what is on the GP bootleg, “Yours Truly, Anymous”.

  2. Comments from a now deleted repost:

Fab, I have 4 AUD rec sets from Boston gigs 20th &25 March, plus the Ultrasonic Studios rec, released by Edsel on vinyl yonks ago, plus the WLIR In New York Radio broadcast released by Rhino as ‘Live 1973’ back in the mid 90s. Both also from March ’73. Of course it goes without saying that all these east coast gigs were with the Fallen Angels, feat Emmylou

  3. Thanks for this! There is not a lot of Parsons live stuff out there, and even though the sound isn’t terrific, it’s better than a lot of his live stuff I’ve heard! I know what you mean about wanting to like his stuff more than you do. I do like his plaintive vocals and often tight band, particularly this iteration with Emmylou Harris. But mostly he introduced me (and I think a lot of people) to the soul of country music, getting me to listen beyond the superficial trappings and hokum of Nashville to discover the often dark and emotionally powerful heart in the songs of people like The Louvin Brothers, Merle Haggard, Bobby Bare, and a host of others. For that I’ll always be a fan of his! At any rate thanks again for posting this!
