  2. Many thanks also Matt. I’ll consider this my early birthday present which is 8/5 lol. Actually disregarding what a lot of people seem to say or at least said at the time, 1978 is turning into one of my favorite Dylan tours…there is just a lot going on during these shows musically and otherwise. I do believe as the tour got to Europe and the US the shows are excellent and some great recordings to be found.

    I have a more general question which you’ve probably gotten before and I wasn’t sure how to post it so I’ll assume you’ll see it here. I don’t think I’ve ever really downloaded a bad sounding recording from the Midnight Cafe. That is credit to you and of course the tapers. As you know some of these shows Contain Multitudes of sources for example Dylan. It’s great to have so many sources and also for people who may prefer say audience versus soundboard recordings.

    My question is…I wish I had the time to listen and compare sources etc. Collecting live music is an awesome hobby but as you know for sure time consuming. I’m not an audiophile really but know a little. Sometimes I’m kind of left to decipher the notes attached to the recordings. I’ve tried to figure out what I think are called shn id’s are for example LB-9999. I know all about the different file formats and have no problems using any file format. Does the number mean much say is it considered an upgrade in quality or was it just tagged at a different time…who decides on these tags? There are certain sources where I recognize the taper or the mixers name and I know for sure it’s top notch. I’ve been downloading music just the last couple of years and never figured it out. Back in the day I just had my huge cassette collection (sadly left behind in a move).

    1. LB stands for Lossless Bob. Someone, or possibly somones grab every Bob show on certain torrents sites, and newsgroups and the like. They meticulously look through the notes, run tech checks, etc and then give it an LB number. As you can imagine with all the various sources out there it gets confusing really quickly. Especially for shows that have been bootlegged and traded for decades. LosslessBob assigns LB#s to a lot of the same sources but that have slightly different lineage or were re-torrented by someone. So if you wanted to collect them all you’d wind up with a lot of shows that sound exactly the same.

      SHNID is basically the same principle. It started back when SHN was the standard lossless format, hence the name. Most of them have now been converted to FLAC but use the same SHNID. Whoever does those IDs is less meticulous with the numbering. So generally speaking each source gets one ID regardless of the lineage. Or something like that. I’m no expert.

      I wish SHNIDs has a site like that losslessbob one. As far as I can tell the only place to find them all is etree.org. It sure would be nice if there was some site that put them in a spreadsheet or something so you could easily chronicle which shows you have and which ones you don’t. I’ve often thought of doing something like that, but who has the time?

  3. Yes, eventually. I’ve been doing a lot of house cleaning which is leaving some links empty. I need to reupad those shows, including this one. It it may take me a few days. Hit me up with a reminder of you don’t see it in a week
