  1. Love the Neil Young tribute to Gordon.

And I’m posting this comment here because the post it’s about has moved on down in the queue. I’m writing to say I listened to the first of two Van Morrison 2023 shows you posted recently, expecting to have a big “meh!” reaction.

Holy shit, they are actually awesome. And I’ll go out on a limb and say that, after years and years of listening to many, many Van boots – most of them from right here at Midnight Cafe actually – these 2023 “Skiffle Shows” are actually among my favorites yet of how he’s set up his shows.

I can’t believe I’m writing that, because the shows seem to contain almost nothing but covers, and are all in that skiffle style. No Moondance or Gloria or anything expected. Van’s gone all Dylan on us in that sense.

But the songs WORK, and the band/arrangements WORK – and Van’s approach is just wonderful. They feel meditative, yet animated, which is a really hard trick. They feel like the young man inside an older person’s body that many of us may feel once we get past 50 (like me) or past 75 (like Van). They sound wistful, yet kind of untroubled. They sound ancient – every song is the anti-Beyonce or anti-Taylor part of life – but they are now.

My enthusiasm for Van had dipped a tad these past couple of years for reasons we don’t need to revisit, but based on the shows you posted – and BTW, I haven’t seen any posted other than here on your site – I went and got the new album yesterday and have a feeling I’ll be spinning it often.

So thanks again for ALL you do on your blog Mat – even occasionally rescuing music for me I thought was outside my interest. I know the blog is a lot of work, but I sure appreciate it.
