OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was my ‘Last Time’ recording the Dead at Cal Expo. It was a really long drive from San Luis Obispo County, but I really enjoyed that venue. For these shows I elected to patch my Sony WM-D6C into my friend John’s Nakamichi CM300x3 rig, which I ended up buying from him later that year when he decided to purchase a set of Audio Technica AT-853a stealth microphones.

We camped at Folsom Lake, just east of Sacramento in the foothills, on Saturday night. My friend Tim Harris and his group were there so we joined their camp site.

This was the show where I met Bear Owsley. He came into the tapers section and borrowed a cable from my friend John, and John turned to me and said, “Do you know who this IS? This is Bear!” I said hi to him and he gave me a dirty look when I asked if he had any ‘samples’! I remember that he was really short, and that he had a little leather case of some of the Grateful Dead-related jewelry that he had made and was selling.

This was the last show that I was able to see Brent, as he overdosed later in the sumner of 1990. I was on a camping trip in Colorado when another deadhead told me it happened, when I was in Leadville. I was devastated. He was so talented in both his playing and his singing. I wanted to put his photo on the cover of this show as a tribute. I included two clippings that I saved from the SF Chronicle about Brent’s death.
