Notes from the Timeline (www.remtimeline.com): The unknown song sounds to me like a cross between Talk About The Passion and Romance, with a bit of Pilgrimage thrown in. I’ve seen some lists claiming it’s either an early version of Talk About The Passion or Pilgrimage, but personally I think it sounds nothing like them and is a song in its own right. This show can be found on the CD bootleg ‘File Under Kudzu’. This show is listed on that boot as being at the 40 Watt Club in Athens in January 1983, however this is the correct date and location.
Hi Mat,
thanks for posting this! I’m not a huge REM fan, but I do really like their work from their start, up through 1989 with the album Green. My favorite release of theirs however is Chronic Town, an EP from 1982 (if my memory serves me correctly). This show features most, if not all of the songs from that first EP. The brilliant Wolves, Lower and Carnival of Sorts being favorites of mine. I still have my old copy on vinyl. To my knowledge Chronic Town was only released on cd as part of a compilation called “dead letter office” that had B-Sides & oddities like velvet underground covers.
I also lived in Greensboro, NC for a time(but not until the early 90’s.)
cheers,
Lapsteelcate
One of the best R.E.M. boots out there! Don’t miss it!
