This set compiles 4 audience recordings of Velvet Underground shows at the Boston Tea Party in 1969.

January 10, March 13, and July 11 are from the famous ‘Professor’ reels (two others exist: December 12, 1968 at The Boston Tea Party, and August 2, 1969 at Hilltop Festival).

March 15 is also known as “The Guitar Amp Tape”.

“Move Right In” on disc 2 is from January 10 recording and should be placed between “Heroin” and “I’m Set Free”.

“Candy Says” on disc 4 is from March 15 recording and should be placed between “I Can’t Stand It” and “Waiting For The Man”.

Despite the back cover reads otherwise, disc 1 has actually 9 tracks (no track separation between “Heroin” and “I’m Set Free, same between “What Goes On” and “I Can’t Stand It”), and disc 4 has 11 tracks (track 1 “Intro” is not listed).

Original artwork (300dpi) with slipcase included.

Disc 3 is particularly interesting. Also known as “The Legendary Guitar Amp Tape” (the original cover was misprinted as “Legendaly,”) it’s a strange recording because someone thought it would be a good idea to hide the microphone inside Lou Reed’s Guitar Amp. The result should have been predictable – a recording of Lou’s guitar with the rest of the music in the background.

I received this collection via FTP and made no changes.

Late summer saw part 2 of Lou’s 1977 European tour. He would complete these dates before closing the year with some shows in Australia and New Zealand. Over the summer, Joanne Kamorin had been installed to provide backing vocals and Stuart Heinrich had replaced Jeffrey Roth on guitar. This was a difficult time for Lou: his relationship with Rachel was falling apart and they had several separations during late 1977. The binaural live tapes he had made in Germany earlier in the year had been rejected by Clive Davis and he would have to add some new studio material to them before they would be released as “Street Hassle”. There were also other problems during the tour – Lou reportedly threatened at least 1 promoter, sacked his soundman “and kicked the monitors off the stage” during one show.

This recording historically circulated as “Mont De Marsan Punk Festival”, but that festival took place on the 5th and 6th August. (One of the organisers of the Punk Festival was Marc Zermati, who was also (jointly) responsible for the the first Velvet Underground vinyl bootleg – “Evil Mothers”). I suppose it could be argued that Lou “headlined” the festival by appearing the next day…..There are long gaps between some songs (over 3 minutes after “Sweet Jane”) while guitars are being re-tuned, and the audience get quite restless at times. Lou doesn’t directly address the audience during the whole show other than to say a cursory “thank you” just before leaving the stage. He manages to fit in only 2 tunes from his last LP – the lightweight “Rock And Roll Heart” and a (relatively) lengthy buzz-saw rendition of “Banging On My Drum” – his ode to “drug masturbation”. There are no “new” songs. “Kicks” gets the usual 1977 treatment – speed manic and menacing. “Leave Me Alone” also gets a long, long workout – possibly the longest available recorded version of this song.

This is a reasonable quality audience recording – the vocals are a bit muffled but there’s not too much tape hiss. At least one other audience recording of this show exists, but it is incomplete and (in my opinion) inferior to this one.

distribute widely but do not sell!

Re-seed note:
This upload contained 3 songs which were from St. Cyprien the day before. Deleted those tracks for the re-seed. And had to correct SBEs.

Notes:

  • I have banged my head of this one for a while now to try to figure out a few points of conflict.
I have exhausted all resources I could find to add some clarification so I am going to put this
out in hopes that someone may have some information on this, I am certainly no Lou Reed expert.
Points of conflict are listed below. Overall a great sounding source and from what I can tell
is totally uncirculated up until now. No editing other than retracking and removing dead air and
repeat material has been done on this since the professional transfer.
  • When I received the raw waves, there were three different tracks for “Heroin”. Two are
definitely different and the last was a partial from d2t02. I have omitted the partial track.
The other two baffle me. d1t06 and d2t02 both seem to be complete. d1t06 is 9:31 seconds and
d2t02 is 15:23? D2t02 is also preceded by a 30 second snippet of “how do you speak to an angel”
that seems to fade seamlessly into the second take of heroin. This would lead me to believe that
    there is some missing material.
  • D2t03 and d2t04 also had duplicate tracks. These were omitted.
  • I have seen two records of set lists for a show at this venue for this date. Neither of them
match this source. I have talked with the one fellow from a Lou reed site and he noted
that there was an early show and a late show for this date. He only knows the late shows exists
because he was informed by a band member that it was taped and has never seen or heard the set
so he was unable to add much clarification.
  • d2t05 this track is 9 minutes of crowd banter. I included it to preserve the integrity
    of the show.

Flaws:

  • d1t01 There is a volume spike in the first 30 seconds of the track.
  • d2t01 This is a 30 second partial of “how do you speak to an angel”. The beginning is cut
  • d2t07 Cut at the end. Source courtesy of Mightyfox – Fox’s Pick # 1 Tracked, flaced, and text created by bgreen

KMET FM Radio Broadcast
Lineage : I downloaded this new torrent from the Cooking For The Down Five blog as flac files which listed it as a “complete first generation tape of the KMET FM Radio Broadcast”.
After that I put it through Magic Audio Cleaning Lab > CD > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac8 > Qualitybootz >My PC > You

From Dave @ QB:
This concert has appeared in at least four guises over time, each with slightly different tracklistings/times:
1. Claim 2 Fame [CD source]
2. Super Golden Radio Shows [CD source]
3. Sweet Lou [LP source]
4. Cassette Source [Gordon L’s source!]
In my opinion the sound is very good, and to my ears is better than the Claim 2 Fame CD. It sounds like it could even be the source for that CD as it has extended versions of many songs including the various DJ chat that has been edited out of the Claim 2 Fame CD.
I have made some alterations to this cassette version:
a) I have boosted the left channel (due to drop in level) on Kicks (from 7:13), She’s My Best Friend, I’m Waiting For The Man, You Wear It So Well, Claim To Fame, Coney Island Baby (from 1:25).
b) I very slightly gave extra punch to most songs as they sounded slightly thin.
c) I smoothed over some of the joins between tracks (ie this shows that it wasn’t taped continuously off the radio) and a couple of drop-outs.
d) I moved the start of some tracks (this, and (c) above, is why the timings are now different to the original blog files).
e) I faded out the ends of both CD’s slightly so they didn’t end abruptly.
f) I removed Heroin which has been officially released (on Between Thought And Expression boxset).
I have included new artwork as well as including the artwork originally included on the Cooking For The Down Five blog.
