Bonnie Raitt played a show at the same place on the same date. Presumably, it was the same gig and one opened for the other, but I can’t find confirmation of that. You can grab a recording of her performance here.

The Historic Fremont (Movie) Theater Was Built In 1942

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the first concert that I recorded since 2019, which by the way, was also Richard Thompson (Electric Trio) at the Fremont Theater. I’m always telling myself, ‘This is the LAST show I’m going to record’, but then my friend in SLO will contact me about another show coming up and I will relent.
I didn’t have much choice these past two years because of the pandemic. No one was seeing any live music. For this show I had planned on bring in my Beyer MV100 microphone preamp but when I got to the show and took a photo of the front of the theater from across the street I noticed that they were using a wand to go over people before they entered. Damn! It takes all the fun out of it when I have to resort to subterfuge to get my gear inside. So, I decided to leave the preamp in the car and run the Neumanns directly into the XLR jacks of the Tascam recorder. The sound inside was really good and I couldn’t really tell much of a difference in the recording after using the internal preamp compared to the Beyer. I’m still kicking myself that I missed the two opening songs, but I was under the assumption that there would be an opening act and I was late getting in. Also, I had forgotten to switch on the phantom power on the back of the Tascam (which powers the microphones) because usually I use the phantom power that the Beyer preamp supplies. So it threw me at first when I wasn’t getting any levels on the recorder when I DID start to record. I guess I’m a little rusty after not recording anything these last two years.

Thanks (as always) to Flying M for the outstanding job he does in post production by reducing loud clapping and cleaning things up to make a more enjoyable listening experience, and thanks to Ethiessen for the great cover artwork and graphic arts design! Thanks also to Dave for persuading me to go to see another great show.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
When I heard from my ‘partner-in-crime’ that his friend Brian’s wife couldn’t make the show I couldn’t pay him for the ticket fast enough. I love John Hiatt and especially enjoy hearing him play solo acoustic. As usual, John tells some funny stories between songs and does a few requests. There was one guy who kept asking for ‘Feels Like Rain’. The Fremont is a beautiful theater and has wonderful acoustics and it is always a real pleasure to see a live performance there. The Fremont was built in 1942 and was one of San Luis Obispo’s two art-deco movie theaters, the other being the Obispo, which was built in 1911 and burned to the ground in late 1975. Though the Fremont still has provisions for showing films, the SLO Film Festival is held there every spring, it has since been converted to a performing arts theater. Thanks so much to Flying M for his wonderful job at post production fairy dust. 🙂

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was all I was able to salvage from this recording after my 1st Tascam DR100mkII suffered an extreme electronic meltdown. (As I was setting up in the stall, the Tascam slipped out of my pack while on my lap and partially fell into the water of the toilet, before I could grab it.) Just a corner of the recorder got wet and it might have been OK if I would have had the time to let it thoroughly dry out, but the show was about to start and I had no recourse but to try and use it. This show would have yielded such a killer recording, it’s really a shame that it didn’t work out. Placement in the theater was superb, the crowd was quiet, and the sound was awesome. My Friend Dave’s friend Rick Williams was recording in the seat next to me on the right and he captured the entire show on his Edirol R09 with the internal microphones. Though his recording is good it doesn’t match the sound of the Neumanns / V2. I asked him if I could use his Edirol in place of my Tascam but he had never used the line out and didn’t know how to go through the menus to change the input setting, especially in the dim light of the theater. I really had high hopes for this show and I was crushed to not be able to capitalize on such a great night. The Lunatec V2 is an extremely high end microphone preamp, but it’s almost impossible to use covertly as it is large and requires a separate 6 volt rechargeable battery, but has awesome sound! Just getting this rig through the doors was no easy feat. I waited through a few songs before turning it on to record and it lasted through a few songs before the display started freaking out and it just died. At least I got a couple of songs reordered to actually hear what a difference the Lunatec V2 makes as compared to my Beyer MV 100. Some shows that I have done resulted in ‘the thrill of victory’, but this night was definitely in ‘the agony of defeat’ column.

OldNeumanntapr Notes; [2015]
I remember this one well. It was only my second stealth show, the first being Miles Davis at Mott Gym at Cal Poly the week before. I had some minor problems, the first being that I accidentally left my pause button engaged for the first part of the show. When I was getting ready for what I thought would be the first flip, I happened to feel the pause button was still pressed in when I touched the deck. I was pissed, after having checked levels repeatedly. (They looked great, in the dark.)

Another problem was that the CM-30 that I had used had a low level rumble in the right channel. There was something amiss in the microphone’s electronics on that channel, and I later replaced it with another CM-30. As D6 owners will no doubt remember, the D6 recorders had a one-knob level control and had only one row of LEDs for the meter, which would show the highest channel. The recorders were not adjusted at the factory and usually had one channel higher or lower than the other. I eventually had mine calibrated by a tech, but in 1990 I had only had it about a year and a half so it was still unbalanced. Being that I was running metal tape, I wanted to push the levels a bit more than normal. Unfortunately, the left channel was too hot and suffered from some distortion. The right channel, recorded at a little lower level, was better, though the right channel was the bad channel on that particular Aiwa CM-30. (During the quiet parts you can hear the low level rumble in the mic, but fortunately at this show there were not that many quiet parts and we were up front in the 8th row. I wish I would have had better mics, but I hadn’t yet bought the Nakamichi CM-300s. That wouldn’t happen until summer of ’90.

So, I transferred the tape with my D5 to my Tascam DR-100mkII, engaging the Dolby B circuits on playback, and used a Y cable to duplicate the undistorted right channel into dual mono. Then I took it into Audacity and added 30 milliseconds of silence to the start of the left (psuedo-stereo) channel to approximate the sound of a stereo delay. It actually doesn’t sound half bad.

I can’t believe that the 25 anniversary of this show was last Tuesday. The night that Santana played was the night of the infamous Cal Poly / San Luis Obispo student riots, and was what caused Poly Royal, the university’s open house celebration, to be cancelled after 50 years. It was quite a shock to see all the police in riot gear swarming around the Cal Poly campus after the show. We were dumfounded, until we saw the news later. Stupid drunk college kids rioting over nothing.

This recording is most likely the only one from this show, though as always mileage may vary and you can never say never or only. Still, I’ve never seen another one. It actually doesn’t sound half bad. I was able to get rid of the distortion from the left channel and by adding the 30 milliseconds of delay (Thanks for the tip Dennis!) it sounds a lot better than a flat monaural recording would. Still, I can’t do anything about the missing first part of the show. At least I came away with something. (About a minute after the tape starts you can hear my friend Tim lean in and say, ‘Did you bring the weed in? I should have brought some in. Everyone’s smoking’ Too funny!)

I never traded this show before, because of the flaws, so it is uncirculated. I think it sounds a lot better now after doing the work in Audacity. I found out that BOTH of the posted set lists to this show (Setlists.com and Santana’s own website) were incorrect. With a little help from my friends I was able to identify the missing tracks. Of course, I have no way of accurately knowing if the first half of the show’s previously posted set list is correct, as my tape recorder was not running for that portion.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was my 1st and only ZZ Top concert. The security was really heavy at this show. They were even searching people coming into the main gates of the fairgrounds, not just the grandstands. Fortunately I had a work pass because my father-in-law (at the time) was working the Democratic booth at the fair and he had an extra pass. So it not only saved me the fair admission charge but I lucked out because they were not searching the work entrance. I was dreading the rowdy drunk crowds that the fair seems to attract but this show was pretty good. We were right behind the board in the first row of the risers. The floor seems to be the craziest. What we missed out on SPL from close proximity to the PA we made up with a quieter crowd.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was another show that my friend Craig recorded that he wanted me to do post production. The Aladdin Theater is a nice intimate theater, according to Craig, and has a capacity of 600 people. Judging by the recordings that he has made there the acoustics sound really nice. Hiatt tells some funny stories, including one where he admits that he pees just before going onstage because otherwise ‘The last part of the show gets speeded up’. As an aging taper, I can relate to this, as I have to do the same just before getting to my seat!

This was the second Lois Capps for Congress benefit that I recorded, the first being at the PAC in 1998. David Crosby & CPR opened and Jackson headlined. It was a good show. I always like hearing songs from the first Jackson Browne LP, ‘Saturate Before Using’. I used the Neumanns for this show, whereas the first benefit I had used the Nyquist omni’s, which don’t have as good of sound. Thanks, as always, to Dave for his help with this one.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was probably the best Dead show I’ve ever seen, and recorded, both in terms of set list and performance. This was my only Halloween show that I’d seen of the Dead, and the band was ON FIRE! After retiring ‘Help On The Way > Slipknot’ for so long it was nice to hear it return. This was my third ‘Dark Star’, and probably the best of the three, and was the only time I’d seen them do ‘Werewolves Of London’. It was quite appropriate for Halloween. Gary Duncan made a return from playing on the 27th and it was cool to see and hear him on ‘Spoonful’ and ‘Dark Star’. This was also the only time I’d seen Ken Kesey and that was really special. There was a guy going through the tapers section that night passing out little raised stick-on pumpkins for Halloween, so I took one and stuck it to the front of my D6. It’s still there!

I went to this show with my ex wife Nikki and my friend Dave. This was the night that I got flustered driving through Oakland going to the Coliseum and accidentally made a left turn onto the railroad racks before making a quick getaway. Hey, I never liked city driving! Dave laughed at me, of course.

When we were coming home, back to San Luis Obispo County, we stopped for a late meal at the Denny’s restaurant in Gilroy. I remember that there were two guys in the lobby talking loudly on big oversized cell phones of the day, and Dave looked at me and said, ‘What do you bet they’re talking to each other!’ Too funny.

We took our new ’91 Honda Civic sedan to this show and Dave was impressed with the cruise control on the way home through the Salinas Valley.
