COMMENT

This is the first half of the Paisley Park concert, the second half can be found on Paisley Park Extravaganza Part 2. The release begins with an interview by the New Power Generation from July 1995 to promote the “Exodus” album. Prince (or Tora Tora) is not present, however it is a fairly interesting 8 minute long interview. Up next is a version of ‘Mad’ played by a DJ and recorded by a crowd member. I’m not entirely convinced it has been recorded at Paisley Park prior to the show starting for several reasons. Firstly the quality of the recording is vastly inferior to the quality of the show recording. Secondly the DJ makes reference to “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince is in town and will be playing in 20 minutes” – I doubt the announcement would be required before he hit the stage at Paisley Park. The version played is phenomenal and far superior to the circulating version. And so to the Paisley Park show itself. The quality of the recording is excellent, however it is a little bassy and Prince appears to be having problems with his microphone throughout the first half of the show. The real problem with the recording are a number of audience members standing close to the person recording. They are audible throughout and insist on either shouting inane comments to Prince throughout, or banging on their tambourine. They do get in the way on occasion, but on the whole they are pretty easily overlooked. The first half of the show is rather typical of many from the period. There are a few lyrics from ‘The Good Life (Big City Remix’) added to ‘Brick House’, and Prince is constantly addressing the crowd with various bizarre statements, such as “Are men from Mars, are women from Venus? Would you feel like a star if I showed you my….house”. Comes as part of Sabotage’s 3cd set packaged in a cardboard wrap-around sleeve.

COMMENT

The first half of this disc contains the second half of the Paisley Park 18th June show (the first half can be found on Paisley Park Extravaganza Part 1). The quality is exactly the same as the previous half of the show, and it unfortunately suffers from the same problems with certain audience members as the first half does. This portion of the show kicks off with a great version of ‘Big Fun’, and the show also appears to have the same microphone problems as the first half with Prince constantly shouting at the sound engineers to balance the levels out correctly. There is a track listed on here as ‘Volkswagen Blues’ which appears rather puzzling at first. It is listed on various on-line sites, along with Upton’s The Vault book as being an unreleased track, but it is nothing more than a seemingly improvised version of BB King’s “How Blue Can You Get” with Prince rearranging the lyrics to suit his own style – certainly not worthy of being classed as an unreleased track. The show closes with a very lengthy version of the ‘Santana Medley’. The second half of the disc is made up of the unreleased NPG 1995 project ‘New Power Madhouse’. As with the other discs in this 3cd set, this comes with it’s own jewel case and accompanying artwork – intended to be kept with the others in a cardboard warp-around sleeve. One of Sabotage’s earliest releases, and a very high quality product containing a great Love 4 One Another Paisley Park concert from mid 1995.

COMMENT

The final instalment of Sabotage’s fantastic Paisley Park 2cd set. This particular disc differs from the others as the show featured is the 18th September 1995 show played after a Gold Experience listening party was held. The show is far less structured than many from the same period with far more emphasis on loose jamming and various crowd chants. That said there is a stunning very guitar heavy version of ‘The Cross’ played. Tracks #7-10 are basically a long jam with various crowd call-and-chants centred around ‘Rock N Roll Is Alive’. Next up is the short 15 minute set played after the filming of various video’s for the Gold Experience and the Love 4 One Another broadcast on 10th October 1995 (listed as 7th October 1995 on the reverse sleeve). The set includes a version of ‘Love…Thy Will Be Done’ which Prince dedicates to Time Warner for releasing the Gold Experience album. The final bonus track is the radio broadcast of ‘Rock N Roll Is Alive’ by the Minneapolis DJ Tony Fly. The sound quality throughout is consistently excellent, however the 10th October 1995 recording is rather heavy with a fair amount of audience noise. On it’s own this is a great release, but combined with the other 2 discs from this 3cd set, it becomes a fantastic addition to an already quality filled release. A stunning early release from Sabotage.

This is a truly fabulous and interesting collection of early Tom Waitsí radio shows that includes music and interviews during a period of about a year and half; around the time of his first couple of album releases. Fascinating because you can actually hear audibly the metamorphosis of Tom from a struggling musician into a star. His singing style change is remarkable and his growing confidence is obvious. The earliest stuff doesnít sound at all like the Tom we know and love. The change in his voice is amazing (smoking and drinking does take its toll, lol). Tomís interviews are very interesting as he tells the background stories of the songs, kind of a pre-Storytellers thing. Donít miss this one if you donít have it. Enjoy.

The Reading Journal: 2024

sinner man by lawrence block

I don’t talk about books as much as I do movies simply because I watch a lot more movies than I read books. I love reading. I love books. But I’d be lying if I said I read all the time. I tend to get distracted by movies and TV shows, social media and…well, this blog.

I try to set time aside each night to do a little reading. Sometimes that works. Sometimes I play silly games until way too late at night and just go to bed.

But Goodreads does a fun little end-of-the-year summary so I thought I’d talk about books for a minute.

I read 17 books in 2024 which seems abysmally small. Especially since half of them were comic books. No shade on comics, I love them, but they do tend to be a little shorter than your typical novel.

Outside of comics I mostly read detective stories which is no surprise and a wonderful book of TV essays by Emily Nussbaum. That reminds me how much I love a good cultural essay and that I should find more of them online.

Anyway, you can see the stats over at Goodreads.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 33: Progress and the Doom Machine

This one goes out in memory of David Plentus, the founder of DylanCover.com, who passed away last month. I didn’t know him, but his site is an invaluable resource and it always gave me a sense of accomplishment when one of my compilations appeared on his NSD page. I hope someone will be continuing the site as a tribute to his dedication.

A couple of notes on this volume’s selection: I know some don’t consider “Ballad of Easy Rider” and “Wagon Wheel” true Dylan songs, but they’re both damn good, and after 33 volumes I decided to take the liberty; if you’re a purist, don’t download those tracks. And I also know John Mayer is widely reviled, but I think he does a nice job with “Don’t Think Twice”; as when I included Guns ‘N Roses, I’ve come down on the side of the music and tried to ignore personalities.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 34: So Long, Honey Babe

Why do we admire Suze Rotolo? I think it’s because she kept her secrets, even at the risk of letting herself be defined (publicly, at least) by a handful of songs written by an articulate but temporarily bitter ex-boyfriend. When she did finally break her silence, it was with a discretion and dignity rare in our modern celebrity culture. So this volume is dedicated to Suze (and does not contain a version of “Ballad in Plain D”).

And thanks to Cover Me for the kind words.

JS starts to get a bit tired of the whole effort starting in here somewhere and I can’t say I blame him at all. And I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I do start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

On the other hand department – another struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me, who don’t have them all. Are they still active here? Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women, maybe?

The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. One wonders how they decided on the misleading description.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 29: Time is a Jet Plane

It’s been a long time, but after finally getting my hands on the Esquires’ (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch) version of “Idiot Wind,” I figured it was time for a comeback. There are three others from that same PEN tribute to Dylan, plus lots of other new names and four songs not previously in the series. Plus the Flatt and Scruggs version of “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind,” as seen on The Beverly Hillbillies (where it was dedicated to Granny).

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. An extra big big shout-out to PDiamond for sending me copies of all the earlier volumes after my hd crash; thanks as well to everyone else who offered! Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk music groups of the 1960s. Unlike most folk musicians of the early 1960s who were a part of the burgeoning music scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Travers grew up there. A contralto, Travers released five solo albums in addition to her work with Peter, Paul and Mary. (picture w/ bob?) May she rest peacefully.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion

Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!

This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). (I put this bit in. don’t mean to pique controversy. as above) r5

The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003

An Israeli bulldozer killed poor Rachel Corrie,
As she stood in its path in the township of Raffa..

But Rachel Corrie believed in non-violent resistance
Put herself in harm’s way as a shield of the people
And paid with her life in a manner most brutal

But you who philosophise disgrace and criticise all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain’t the time for your tears.

The Movie Journal: 2024

I watched 32 movies in December. 22 of them were new to me. 15 were made before I was born.

That’s all I’ll say about December because this is mostly going to be a year in review.

I watched 471 movies in 2024. That’s an average of 39.2 per month or 9 per week. 360 of them were new to me. For the first time since 2019 the number of movies I watched in a year was less than the previous year. I watched an astonishing 529 movies in 2023. I don’t know if I’ll ever beat that record. 471 movies is a lot so you might not believe me when I say I intentionally slowed my watching down a bit last year. I made an effort to do a little more reading and watch some television shows.

My wife and I like watching TV on weekday evenings. We try to find one or two shows we can enjoy and watch together. This year we watched our way through Remington Steele and started watching Moonlighting. We also started Twin Peaks for like the third time. Maybe this time we’ll actually make it through (we like the show, but for some reason, we’ve always gotten distracted and paused it for a long time, and it is a show you really need to have fresh on your mind).

Anyway, I definitely slowed my movie-watching down just a little bit.

I kept up several monthly themes from the previous years, dropped a few, and added several new ones. I still very much like doing these movie themes. I still say it helps me focus my movie viewing and my writing. Though some themes work better than others.

I did not watch enough movies that were made in 2024 to do any type of Top 10 list but I wanted to mention a few of my favorites.

Rebel Ridge: Jeremy Saulnier’s film plays like an update of Rambo: First Blood with less over-the-top action but a terrific central performance from Aaron Pierre. Saulnier has solidified himself as one of our best genre directors and he gets top marks from me here.

Love Lies Bleeding: I love that Kristen Stewart has carved out such an idiosyncratic career after making those Twilight films. Here she plays a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with a bodybuilder and finds herself involved with some rough gangsters. It is a terrific little thriller and it takes some unexpected turns.

Thelma: June Squibb had a long career as a wonderful character actress and this was one of the last films she made before she passed and one of the few in which she got a starring role. She’s perfect as an elderly woman who gets scammed out of some money through a telephone call and decides to take matters into her own hands.

Classic Doctor Who dominated my most-watched actors categories for most of the year and it is they who remain at the top here at the end. The only change from last month is that Barbara Stanwyck slipped into a tie for fifth place with seven films watched.

Terence Fisher rose to the top of the directors list many months ago and he managed to stay there. He directed many of the Hammer Horror films and I watched a lot of those with my wife on Friday nights. Dario Argento bumped himself to third place mostly on the heels of me watching and reviewing a collection of his made-for-TV movies.

Overall it was a very good year in movie watching. I hope to do more movie writing in the coming year and do a better job of linking to Cinema Sentries when I review something for them. Either way here’s to another great year of movie watching.
