114-d2t04 – Turn on Your Lovelight

Known flaws:
-BIODTL through I Know you Rider: right channel mix is all Bobby
with Jerry and the vocals on the left channel. Mix balances out
in Black Peter.
-Good Lovin cuts just before the end.
-Splice in the Other One @ 03:39 prior to the end. Doesn’t sound
like much is missing here.
-Brief subsecond static towards the last few minutes of Lovelight.

Bust fund benefit with Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac.
Peter Green plays on Lovelight.

– there is a slight tinny/tunnel quality to the sound. the spectral
profile shows an abrupt cut off in the usual background noise signature
at ~5kHz with a gradual resumption of noise from 18kHz increasing in
intensity up to the upper limit of 22kHz. This might suggest some
signal processing has been done somewhere in the lineage.
– there is some audible, though minor, clipping (Easy Wind for example)

DEADLISTS COMMENTS The circulating tape breaks off during Cosmic Charlie
but tn lists another 35 minutes. The tape which contains this list is
labeled “1/29/70” but 1/30/70 is the correct date. According to Tom
Constanten this was his last performance as a regular member of the band (Between Rock & Hard Places p. 84). Back at their hotel afterward, the Dead were “busted down on Bourbon St.” Fleetwood Mac and The Flock were also on the bill (DeadBase

splice source #2 (from mp3 online stream): WWOZ.org 128 kbps mp3 stream > StationRipper v2.98.2 > Sony Vaio vpcs131fm > captured mp3 stream > hard drive > MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) > Quicktime 7.7 > (convert mp3 to wav/aiff) > aiff (excerpt edited into the main FM audio file)

Note: Several of the 2012 Jazzfest broadcasts, including this one, are marred by what sounds like hard-drive glitches – perhaps a fragmented drive or an overloaded processor on the PC used during the broadcast. The glitchiness was also present in the WWOZ online stream, however the stream by CIUT in Toronto (which was simulcasting the WWOZ broadcast) appears to have been unaffected. CIUT’s stream was only 96kps, so sometimes the splices may be fairly noticeable.

This recording includes the following splices:
Track 2:
.7-second splice at 1:49
.9-second splice at 1:51
.8-second splice at 1:54
.5-second splice at 1:59
.75-second splice at 2:02
1-second splice at 2:05
.9 seconds splice at 2:06
1.2-second splice at 2:09
.3 seconds splice at 2:11
.75-second splice at 2:16
.5-second splice at 2:18
3.4 seconds splice at 2:23

Track 4: A .6-second splice at 4:47

Track 8:
1-second splice (including a 1.8-second crossfade) at 1:01 plus a 3-second splice from the FM source from a similar passage
2-second splice at 1:01 (still sounds a bit glitchy)
0.8-second splice at 4:16 (from where the FM signal and WWOZ.org stream both dropped out entirely for about a second); plus another splice of about 1 second from the WWOZ online stream to repair a different glitch.

Additionally, a very long station ID was shortened by about 1:07 at the end of Track 3.

Warren Haynes, guitar and vocals
Dr. John, vocals, keyboard
Ivan Neville, keyboards, vocals
Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns (Efrem Towns, Roger Lewis & Kevin Harris)
Terence Higgins, drums
Nigel Hall, keyboards
Ron Holloway, sax

Phil’s amp fails, forcing an unscheduled acoustic set to close the
show with. Jerry plays electric guitar for some of the acoustic
set. This is also the day that the Dead were busted by the
New Orleans police before the show, prompting some appropriate
stage banter. The recording was normalized with Sound Forge,
which was also used to remove a few small pops.
