JEMS master recording and excellent sounding recording. This is the first time(August 2009) a transfer of this recording has been made available directly from the master cassette. All songs are complete with the only cut at the tape flip during the audience cheering between Magic Bus/Amazing Journey.

After about a seven week layoff The Who returned to the stage for the first night of their ‘Worldwind Tour’ which consisted of 2 shows at the Capital Centre just outside Washington D.C. and 2 shows in Florida. Despite being a little rusty this was a great show, as was the following night. This was my first long road trip to see The Who, and this first night I was in the eighth row, on Pete’s side of the stage. This is one of my best Who recordings. I’ve included a couple of photos I took during Sparks this night.

Comments:
Sound quality is remarkably good on tracks 1-12, especially for recordings of that era.
Tracks 1-5 also appear on official releases of the John Peel sessions. The first two
Interstellar Overdrive tracks are short studio takes of the intro; the third is an extended
16:46 version; the fourth is a short 2:40 version. Rat Race, at over 11 minutes, is an
excellent track. The sound quality on tracks 13-20 is not quite as good as the rest of the
CD. This CD is highly recommended for any Syd freak or Floydologist. A must have! -ECM

If you are a Syd-o-phile, then yes, you’ll want to buy it. Otherwise, it would probably be
best to leave it sit on the shelf (or in the bin).

This CD more or less has 3 distinct portions. 1) The Peel Sessions – these are the exact
same takes that have appeared on the RoLO of the same name. On LL & OR the quality is
remarkable for these tracks. It would seem that the legal product was used as the master.

Portion 2) Tonight Let’s All Make Love In London Soundtrack – Although named Rat
Race, the first track of this portion is really Nick’s Boogie. Following this track are 4
different versions of Interstellar Overdrive. The first two appear on the official TLAMLIL
soundtrack CD named “Interstellar Overdrive (reprise 1 & 2)” The 3rd IO is the extended
version that appears on the TLAMLIL soundtrack CD for the first time (the 16 minute
version). The 4th IO is the version of the song that appeared on the original vinyl version
of the TLAMLIL that was released following the movie. It’s about 3 minutes in length. The
quality of these recordings varies somewhat. There is more tape hiss than I’d expect if
they’d used the official CD as a master for these tracks. However, I don’t hear any pops
or crackles to indicate a vinyl source. The short version of IO (3 minute version) is slightly
worse quality than the other 3, but they’re pretty close.

Portion 3) Outtakes – The quality here varies immensely. The versions of Lucy Leave and
King Bee that appear here sound exactly like the versions on A Saucerful Of Outtakes.
I’d go so far as to say that one of the two copied the other. There are several songs that
appear here (ie: Word Song and Birdie Hop, possibly others) which have surfaced on
Opel, but stupidly the copies presented on this disk weren’t lifted from Opel. Instead, they
chose some vinyl source. Also, a few of the songs (Dominoes and Milky Way especially)
seem to be presented at the wrong speed! Anyone with facilities to produce a CD should
have equipment enough to present their recordings at the proper speed. There’s a
wonderful version of Long Gone on this disk, but, stupidly, it is faded out before the
end of the tune! I believe that the whole version appears on the vinyl RoIO “Vegetable
Man”. It really upset me to learn that it was mutilated for this CD. Swan Lee (or Untitled
Instrumental #1 from Vegetable Man) is presented here in its entirety (unlike on A Saucerful
of Outtakes, where they faded it out about half way through..) Damn good song.

If you are able to buy this disk (serial number DIYE 16) and Syd Barrett’s Last Screams
(DIYE 15), you’ll be happy to notice there there is no repeated material. If you buy these
as well as Syd’s official albums, you’ll have a pretty good overview of his career. -SCOTT

Recently, a copy of the RoIO Lucy Leave & Other Rarities was found containing music
thought to be from the Glen Miller Orchestra, rather that the expected Syd Barrett.
Otherwise, it was intact (with correct liner notes & picture of Syd on the disk.) -SCOTT

Notes: From a “millionth generation” cassette bought in Argentina some 17 years ago by our friend Alejandro. For some reason this recording has not been heavily circulated, and is shrouded in mystery. We have no legitimate doubts as to the authenticity of this recording. It appears to be from a working set of demo tapes that were used as the actual blueprint for The Final Cut -the last album that Pink Floyd would release with Roger Waters in the lineup. In some places the difference between this and the actual release are subtle, and in other places, the differences are quite stark, changing the overall tone of some of the meanings inferred from the actual release. We won’t be listing all of the differences here, so you can enjoy your own personal exploration of this work in progress.

Free Range Pigs is releasing this volume for it’s historical significance. While the sound quality is not “disappointing”, the recording does “show it’s age” in some places. We’re not exactly sure, but it sounds as though this was recorded in a professional studio, so it is very likely that somewhere in this big world, a sonically superior copy exists.

Comments:

From Pigland East – This tape is complete and with only one minor
cut–a very brief tape flip at 44:03 into the second set, which
indicates the taper was using a 90 minute cassette. As usual, FRP strives
to bring you the best possible sound without destroying the archival value
of the source tape by attempting a heavy remastering job.

The audience claps after the 3rd verse during ‘Pigs (3DO)’ and Roger did
not squeal a number. The audience is generally very quiet and respectful,
which is a refreshing change from the standard audience recording of this
tour. Not a single firework to be heard! David performs an incredible jam
during ‘SOYCD (Pts. 6-9)’. This is truly a recording of a band playing at
its peak.

From Pigland West – I’m listening to the show again. What strikes
me the most is the amazing clarity of the recording and the polite and
obviously captivated audience. They are like a Japanese audience–quiet
when they should be and clapping/cheering where appropriate. Hard to believe
they are French (just kidding Pigland Europe!). The performance, I think,
is rather uninspired but certainly an excellent and competent one. A bit
mechanical, maybe. Does David mess up the words in one of the songs?

Comments: Recorded at The Town Hall in Leeds. This one is another amazing find. It’s one of the earliest Dark Side shows – the sixth to be exact. This tape captures the entire show, including a lengthy ‘Speak To Me’ punctuated by members of the crowd calling to each other. You can hear cash register sound effects and a cow mooing as well. Or was that a sheep?

There is a fair amount of hiss, which is not unusual considering the age of this tape. Over 32 years! The last two tracks of the Dark Side should be called “warped” versions, since there is a ton of warble. Even Mo Becks would be challenged to work this one out. It finally lets up a minute or so into One Of These Days.

The original taper copied his source and sent it to a friend, who forwarded it on by his friend to our good friend JCE, who took sterling care of it over the years. He was kind enough to share it with us all. More precisely, the lineage is; Cassette(1 or 2)>Edirol UA-3FX>HDD>CEPro>WAV>SHN.

Show Notes:
The crowd is very quiet, which is not surprising, since we’d be too, if we had the chance to hear one of the first Dark Side performances.

‘Money’ is a fun listen, especially since the boys don’t get the harmony quite right during the opening. There is a small break in the recording during ‘Brain Damage’. It’s obvious from the sound that the taper was moving around for some reason — maybe to see the effects? We also suspect he was starting to have battery problems.
This is unfortunate because a good bit of ‘Eclipse’ suffers from speed issues that would have taken another 32 years to fix! This lingers a little bit into ‘One Of These Days’ although it is not as bad; it slowly resolves itself and is gone by the end of the track.

It’s great that the taper captured the break after ‘Dark Side’ even though it is sometimes muffled, probably from hiding the mic. You can hear wind effects, a dog howling, and the boys tweaking their instruments in between. This is rare for an early 1972 recording.

During ‘Echoes’, there is a small break, with no loss of music. The tape includes the entire band break with audience applause after ‘Echoes’. Seamless.

A long, strange trip for this gem. It ended up in our intrepid hero’s hands as the surprise diamond in a trade.

In his own words–

“The person who I received this show from was not able to provide me with any useful information. He actually told me it was from a radio show in 1967 with the songs Astronomy Domine and Green is the Colour among others. There was no artwork, just multi-colored stick on labels with the name Pink Floyd, the letters CWRU, and 1967 on them. When I inquired about the source he just said that he was glad I liked it. Further inquiries were given answers unrelated to the question or not answered at all… Either he was just reluctant to reveal anything or was just unaware of what it was he had.”

So for once we have no lineage information for you. However what we do have is an amazing and complete document of the Floyd in their prime giving us an utterly stunning performance. Of special note is the “jam sessions” mid-song that seems to take place during each track. FOS gets a bit of a Beatlee-sque/Abbey Road type of treatment, Set The Controls is a free for all about half way through, and is that a bow solo ala Jimmy Page during the break during One Of These Days? Careful With That Axe is full of angst and just… well, rocks! Echoes is perfect as well! Finally, we get a rare treat with Blues included for good measure.

As a result of our cleanup efforts there’s great definition of the instruments and you can hear some things that I know I’ve never heard before in these live recordings. These surprises make this one a keeper and a welcome addition to the collection.

Technical Notes:

It looks as though some NR was performed in the past as part of the upper end has been completely removed (from 165000 Hz -22050 Hz).

Comments: From a very clean clone of the master cassettes. These tapes are the source for every Bradford release that you have heard. This is a direct transfer from the first generation tapes which date from 1971.

The recording includes all tune-ups and band chatter between tracks. The boys are in a playful mood, as you can tell by their interaction with the audience, which is very quiet during the songs. There is no appreciable hiss. The taper also used 60 minute cassettes, 30 minutes to a side, which is obvious by the breaks.

  • ‘Careful With That Axe, Eugene’: The recording begins with the first few notes of the song. I
    especially like Roger’s scream since it is–by my count–a full 19 seconds long!
  • ‘Fat Old Sun’: A great jam session. Vocals are not perfectly clear, but you can hear every word. There are some interesting guitar licks during the tune-ups.
  • ‘Set The Controls’: The first tape flip occurs during the intro. After the song, Roger introduces ‘Atom Heart Mother’ then says the band is going to take a break, followed by what sounds like
    “then we’re going to have a drink.”
  • ‘Atom Heart Mother’: During the intro, there are several pops which sound as if they might have
    been due to a loose microphone lead.
  • ‘Echoes’: The opening pings to this “new piece” just pierces your skull.
  • ‘Cymbaline’: The “footsteps” sequence goes on for quite a while. The third and final tape flip
    occurs during this sequence.
  • ‘One Of These Days’: David introduces this new song using its full title. This was the second
    performance of this song, the first was at the BBC 0n 30 September.
  • ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’: The final break in the tape occurs prior to ‘Celestial Voices’.

“While this RoIO is something of a grab bag of material from numerous sources, mostly from the years 1967-1973, the sound quality is very good, and some of the tracks not common even to unauthorized releases.

Of most interest are the numerous studio demos and outtakes with early version of songs from Dark Side of the Moon, even though it seems like the February 17, 1970 dates given for demos of “Breathe in the Air” and “On the Run” are awfully early. Those two particular recordings are more rock-oriented, straightforward, and less technologically ornate than the familiar official ones. But the 1972 demos/outtakes are closer in nature to the Dark Side of the Moon productions — less ornate and polished, certainly, but with the structures and arrangements nearly complete. The acoustic guitar-and-voice demo of “Money” is an exception.

Also mixed in are superb-fidelity BBC radio renditions of “Embryo” and “Point Me in the Sky”; a odd pair of “studio demos” of “One of These Days” that use ugly distorted voices in the mix; a 1972 “US Promo Single” version of “Free Four”; and a mono mix of “Fearless.”

Going back to the Syd Barrett era and its immediate aftermath, there’s also a demo version of “Candy and a Currant Bun,” a BBC airshot of “Scarecrow,” a “Belgian video version” of “Corporal Clegg,” Barrett’s demo “Bob Dylan Blues,” and a recording of Barrett’s “Late Night” with the “original backing track without vocal.”

In the only chronologically jarring entry, there’s also a 1988 soundcheck of “On the Road Again” — yes, the old blues song made into a hit by Canned Heat in the late 1960s.

Even considering this is a RoIO, it would be nice if there were notes explaining just how these songs differ from both official versions and other performances of the tunes floating around; even serious Pink Floyd fans will likely have a hard time identifying all the specific variations. Otherwise, however, it’s well packaged in both its graphics and fidelity aspects.”
