d1t03- End of song is cut

“During this period Symphony Sid Torin’s Friday night/Saturday morning “All Night, All Frantic” show consisted of Sid and Bob Garrity taking requests and playing records, interspersed with short live broadcasts from the Royal Roost and occasionally the Apollo Theater. This set by the Davis Nonet is probably the third transmission from this night — Sid introduces the broadcast with “And right now, ladies and gentlemen, we’re back to the Royal Roost…” The first broadcast was probably the Tadd Dameron Group, which typically opened with the “Jumpin’ with Symphony Sid” theme. Next was a set with the Charlie Parker Quintet (with Davis on trumpet). After a studio break, “Impressions of Modern Music, done with the new Miles Davis organization.”

Pace Ken Vail, who claims that the Nonet recordings were made on September 11 and 18, most discographers place the Nonet broadcasts on September 4 and September 18. Here’s the evidence:

In an interview published in Downbeat (January 27, 1950, pp. 18-19), Pat Harris notes that the Davis Nonet engagement at the Roost lasted two weeks. Davis confirms this in his autobiography: “Monte Kay booked us [i.e. the Nonet] into the Royal Roost on Broadway for two weeks.”

In introducing the Parker Quintet on September 4, Symphony Sid remarks, “And don’t forget, here at the Royal Roost, we’re bringing to you starting the 7th, the great Dinah Washington, and on the 9th, the great Count Basie and his wonderful organization. It’ll be Count Basie, Dinah Washington, and the great Miles Davis organization…”

But which organization? Variety reviewed the second-week Roost lineup on September 15, and after enthusing about Count Basie and Dinah Washington, the review concludes, “Relief crew is Miles Davis’ outfit. With three rhythm, one trumpet and a sax, it cuts a good session.” This would be the All-Star Quintet with Davis and Lee Konitz, not the Nonet. In the December
1996 issue of Jazz Journal, Konitz is quoted as saying, “The way I remember it, the band [the Nonet] did the first week, and for some reason Miles and I did the second week as a Quintet, with John Lewis, Al McKibbon, and Max Roach.”

A September 9 advertisement (sorry, I no longer have the source) includes the following:
Opening Tonite Monte Kay Presents “Count Basie & His Great NEW Orchestra,” Dinah Washington, and “Miles Davis Quintet featuring Max Roach”

The extant live Roost material from September 11 consists of ten tunes by the Count Basie Group, nothing by other artists. On the basis of this evidence it seems that Davis was booked at the Royal Roost for most of September:

Sept 2-8: Charlie Parker Quintet and Miles Davis Nonet (9/4 recordings of both groups extant)
Sept 9-15: Miles Davis All-Star Quintet (no recording has surfaced)
Sept 16-22: Miles Davis Nonet (9/18 recording extant)
Sept 23-29: Miles Davis All-Star Quintet (9/25 recording extant)

I’m very grateful to Leif Bo Petersen for help with the circumstances of the Royal Roost sessions.”

Made into one track.
Izotope RX > attenuated buzz at around 16k – not too audible but clears the top end a little (from 3min 50 to end of source)
Very light noise reduction – mostly to remove the vinyl rumble and low hum occurring.
Inverted phase of right channel to make the whole thing mono.
Normalised.
Exported, into audacity where I redid track markers, and exported as flac8 – including the announcment track initially removed.

From a tape made by Donald Coy. Edited to Parker solos and exchanges. The tape was recorded off a dressing room speaker, and parts of some items (“Embraceable You” through “All the Things You Are”) are marred by conversation. It’s unlikely that the titles from this session and the next one are all from the same date, but they’re probably from the same gig.

The Sound was pretty good
Just a bit ‘dusty’ so I used 3 CEP utilities to remove pos and clicks and
after that I had only to remove very few clicks

The right channell needed normalization too

I have also divided Mc intro from tracks so that those ,
(like Myself) who don’t like
listening to people shouting before tracks ,
can leave such things out.

  • This recording not for the casual listener. This is one of those that is definetely
for completists only. There are more flaws to this than I can list, but it is a
piece of history and is worth preserving none the less.
  • Thanks to Peter Losin for contributing this source source. http://www.plosin.com/
  • “Very fragmentary — edited to Parker solos for the most part. These may be dubs of
wire recordings; fidelity is very poor throughout.”- Credit to Peter Losin,
    http://www.plosin.com/
  • “Philology W 844 contains 22 titles purporting to be from this date, but I’m skeptical.
First, the trumpet player sounds like Kenny Dorham, not Davis. Second, Frank Loesser’s
tune “On a Slow Boat to China” was not copyrighted until 1948, and Parker’s “Barbados”
was not recorded in the studio until the Savoy date on September 18, 1948. It’s very
unusual for a Parker original to appear in the live repertoire before it has been
recorded. Third, Parker’s quotations and his playing (especially during his solo on the
second “Slow Boat to China”) sound like 1949, not 1947. The Parker Quintet (with Dorham,
Haig, Potter, and Roach, and guest vocalist Arthur Daniels) were booked for two weeks
at Chicago’s Pershing Hotel Ballroom (March 28-April 10, 1949), and my guess is that
those 22 tunes were recorded during this gig. If so, Davis was half a country away in
New York at the Royal Roost and Capitol Recording Studios.” – Credit to Peter Losin,

Monterey Pop Festival
County Fairgrounds
Monterey, CA
June 16-18, 1967

The Monterey Pop Festival was held June 16 – 18, 1967 at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California, also the site of established folk, jazz and blues festivals. It was the first large rock festival, with around 200,000 people attending, and served as a template for the Woodstock Festival in New York State two years later. Many of the performers got their first big-time exposure at Monterey.

Great production for the Italian Bootleg label “On Stage”, made in the 1994.
Six cd for three Volums to witness THE FIRST BIG ROCK FESTIVAL

Maybe this is not the most complete show (anyway, see the tracklist)… for sure, it’s a great show in a very amazing quality audio.
